Renting Domain Names!

May 22, 2013

Hi,

Let’s start with the conclusion: don’t ever consider renting a domain name from someone! This has got to be one of the stupidest (and nearly criminal) business ideas ever hatched on the Web.

What’s this about renting domain names?

I was almost floored recently when I got an email with the offer to rent a domain name from someone … like renting a commercial location in a mall, I suppose is the idea. The problem is, that despite what these scummy domain speculators would have you believe, the value of a domain is practically 100% in the work you do to BUILD up the value of a domain – there is very little value in the domain name itself.

What exactly are scummy domain name speculators?

In a nutshell, these are people who buy up domain names for $8.99 and hope to flip them to a sucker for a crazy amount of money. I’ve seen people try to extract $30 000 for a domain name that had no history and no site – just the name! This is total crap and don’t buy into it.

If you don’t believe me, let’s consider some of the most successful Web companies out there and let’s see what their domains are:

  • Google
  • Facebook
  • Tumblr
  • mySpace

… You get the idea. None of these mega successful sites had domain names that would be considered of any value before the sites were built up. Traditionally, valuable domain names would contain real worlds and be short … for example:

  • pets
  • trucks
  • businessreports

So with the above words, slap on the end a .com or a .net etc … and the domain name speculators would claim they are super valuable. History and reality tells us they are not.

Don’t get suckered in by one of these huskers who can’t come up with a real business, so they try to extract cash from you for having done nothing – they are leeches.

… Kinda like many investment bankers.
