  1. If you use a software like content management systems, blogs, ecommerce and others, you might find yourself needing to update them. No problem right? Well, it's not a problem unless you do a lot of customization to the core files. Those updates will overwrite those custom files and your work is lost. To avoid this, you need to detect and merge the differences of each file, compare source code, compare program output, etc. Below are a few software that can do the job of comparing files side by side indicating which lines of codes have been changed or any code that you have customized vs the upgrade files. 2. I've seen sites get listed within a week. In rare cases, it takes longer.
  3. I haven't used HTML Kit in awhile but they constantly update their software and even offer support. It's pretty simple and plenty of plugins to enchance the coding experience.
  4. I really thought this might be of interest to all. Canonical Link Tag

Do you have .htaccess to tell it what to redirect to where? This link might be helpful to you.
  6. I would think not but you might want to check before you do. IE seem to be the only one that wants to integrate their browser into their OS. As for Mac users, that I can't say. Otherwise, I don't mess with betas. I just so happened to find that the other day and thought I'd post it here.
  7. I can't recall off hand but there a few decent free web hosting around. There are a few that are dirt cheap. Give it some time and someone here will provide a link or two that you can use to upload your files so we can then review what you have.
  8. Not all redirects are alike. You may need to add some code to that page in order for the .jsp files to be redirected. Here's a good source that breaks down the types of redirects. Look for the .jsp down near the end.
  9. The link to your site did not work. It's pretty difficult to add an image over on top of another image if both images are coded into the html using the img tag. Without see the code you have now, it's hard to say.

You didn't give us much to go on because we can't see the code for the 404 page. My bet is that you can just take one of your existing php page, save it as a 404.php and edit that page to conform to 404 details that you wish to display.
  11. If your site is in frames then you will need to take it out of frames. With frames, the only pages that your site will get indexed is the index.html (as you mentioned above) and the initial default frame page when you enter into a frame site. Frames are like multiple windows in the browser and the only page that gets indexed is the root frame that puts it all together. Go ahead and click on a few of your links and look at the url in the address bar of your browser and see if it changes to reflect the pages your are viewing. Server Side Includes is not like that. It will put your header/footer or whatever includes you want to use together with each of your content pages.
  12. There could be a number of reason why your pages are not listed....full flash site, keyword spamming, inproper use of semantic codes or lack of, etc. Here is a couple of tools that can help: Google Webmaster Tools Yahoo Site Explorer Submiting your site to either of these will not help much if your site is not coded properly to the point where it penalizes you instead. If you like to know if your site is up to speed for search engines, provide us your url so we can take a look.

  14. Since IE8 RC1 is out, I have been waiting for awhile to see what's out there to enable me to run multiple versions of IE. Internet Explorer Collection I personally have not attempted to install this yet.

  16. I am just guessing here but if you are using a master file (.dwt) which then is connected to all of your other html files then those files will continue to use whatever that master file uses except for the editable region that you've assign.
  17. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a link to the actual page because it is a restricted access that contains vital personal information. The sorting is not the problem. The problem is when you expand the table itself but it doesn't stay open when you choose one of the sorting method. Here's a link to a another site that is using the same click toggle script: chi ccorpo rateapparel.com/branding-bout iques.asp Click on the first 'see details' and below you will find a table. Now keep in mind that this table does not have a sorter function but if you click anywhere within that expanded area, it closes back up. This is the same problem when you click on one of the sort/query from the any of the table column heading. Now I found this which brings us closer but we are hoping to use something that will expand fully and retract completely with just a click of the button.
  18. I'm looking for a script that will allow me to expand a table that has a set of sortable data. I've tried to use toggle which works fine when I need to expand/show the table to allow all the data to appear. The problem lies is that when I want to sort the data, the toggle resets back to close/hide thus I have to expand it again but then it ends up back to the default sort string. I basically need something that will expand the table data and stay open regardless if the page refresh or not even when the user sorts the data. It will only need to reset or close when the user clicks the hide/close button to close it or when the browser window is closed. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  19. The short answer is that CMS uses databases and so you don't need to really know PHP or MySQL unless you want to make customization that will reconfigure how that CMS functions. Nearly all CMS build the database tables for you. The only thing you have to do is create a database name which is normally done in the control panel via your host. When you install a CMS, it will ask what that database name and of course the user name and password for that database which is provided when you first create the database name. If you have a domain and a host provider already, you can check the host's control panel to see if they have a few CMS software to install. This will probably be the easiest way to get started.
  20. Tacky was the word I was looking for. First link fixed.
  21. Over the years I detest marquees and auto-scrollers. From a surfer's perspective, I find them difficult to read and control. With that in mind, I don't encourage my clients to use them. I don't think I even seen one in over two years until now... Just recently I found these two links: this one and this one. It seems to be an improvment but I still don't like them. Maybe it's me but I would like people's opinions from a surfer's perspective and not a developer's perspective. Thanks.
  22. I concur with Ben. It certainly took me a bit to figure out what it was about and how to navigate around and I have very good surfing skills along with web design experience. Your flash site is cool but lacking simplicity. Why make it difficult for the average visitors?
  23. You don't need to reinvent the wheel if it has been done already. What you should be looking for is a Content Management System (CMS) that will do most (if not all) of these functions. Here's a topic that list a handful of CMS software. You can check out Open Source CMS, Blog, etc. Each one has it's own demo that you can try out. I believe all of them are free but you will need to learn the software itself. Some are easy to customize while others are more difficult. I believe we have users on this forum that uses Joomla, CMS Made Simple and Drupal that can provide you will some help with any questions you may have. How much would a site like yours cost? It hard to put a price on something base on how very little info we have to go with. Besides, such figures are usually not discussed publicly on this forum.

    css margin issue

    The menu's unordered list has default margin and so you will need to add this: #menu ul {margin: 0;}
  25. I have to ask...what is 'Green' about Dreamhost that are different from other web hosting? And what is the percentage of 'Green' that gives them that label?
