  1. Many web servers will have that type of filter built in. The job would require writing a script (PHP, Perl) that scans files for keywords that might indicate a potential for trouble. One thing you can do, is disable the ability for PHP to run in certain directories that are accessible from the outside. And yes, these sorts of things need to be updated. Stefan
  2. For smaller sites, I recommend using Wordpress as it is easier to use, easier to set up and there is a HUGE community backing it with templates and plugins. And being the shameless self promoter that I am, we also have a nice video course on how to edit and create Wordpress themes/templates. Stefan
  3. Hi, Yep, .co is better than a lot of the TLD's we've seen come out over the years: - .biz - .info - .name etc ... Still, I think the original three (.com, .net, .org) still have some cache. Stef
  4. Yes, it is Objective C. I actually have an article coming out introducing iPhone development. Actually, my brother is writing it, and I am just proofing a few things. Stefan
  5. Hi, I've been keeping my eye on the smartphone race (iPhone, Android and Blackberry) and was wondering if any of you have been involved in building websites or web applications for smartphones? Being that smartphone use is growing super fast, while Apple, Google and RIM are fighting each other for supremacy, I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to keep your eye on that race. For example, with continued adoption of smartphones and if iPhone becomes the dominant smartphone while it continues to block Flash, that could impact on how web designers build their websites. Stef
  6. Hi, As some of you probably know, Dreamweaver CS5 is out and it looks interesting. Some new abilities and enhancements: - Improved PHP code hinting. - Integrated CMS support. - CSS inspection .. kinda like Firebug where you can toggle CSS properties to see what happens. I will be looking into this in the coming days with articles and videos. Stefan
  7. Adobe has something called Contribute that works with Dreamweaver... it is easy to use and not expensive. What is interesting is that you can set it up so only certain aspects of a web page is editable so when your clients go into the site to make changes they can't screw things up. I've never used it, but an old client of mine loved it. Stefan

    Rush

You are liking Rush now because you have become a nerd ... plain and simple! Get the first Rush album, it is kinda like Led Zep 'light': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_%28Rush_album%29 .. It has a different feel than the other Rush albums. Stefan
  9. Man, I've seen that before! ... You should have seen some of the stuff I put out!!
  10. I figured you might appreciate that. .. Yes, it took a few years too long, but better late than never. Stefan
  11. Hi, I just wanted to announce that we will soon be releasing closed captioned versions of our video screencasts. So far we have four just about ready to go: - Web Design 1 - Photoshop to Web - Beginner's PHP - Dreamweaver CS3 CS4 Basics ... More to come. Stefan
  12. CodeIgniter is a PHP framework and from what I've seen, it is pretty good. I decided to back the Zend Framework thought because I figured it would become the predominant PHP framework over time - as it has. Stefan
  13. Hi, I could go over everything point by point ... but what would be the point, given that I've covered much of what you want to learn about PHP OOP on killerphp.com. Please do the tutorial and let me know if you have any questions. Keep this rule in mind: the more complex the project or the more people working on a project, the more useful OOP becomes. Stefan
  14. Hi, If you are looking to blog in the community, let me know and I will look into it for you. Stefan
  15. I think you just answered your own question: you can look to past patterns as a guide. ... Human behavior on a macro level is fairly predictable. Stefan
  16. Hi, I wrote a quick post last week about HTML5 and when web designers should use it. In short, I said that it was not something to learn unless you were developing sites specifically for the iPad, Iphone and other HTML5 enabled browsers/devices. Well, I am not the only one who thinks so: Forrester Research is: Stefan
  17. For over two weeks I had this lingering slightly uncomfortable cold that basically gave me laryngitis ... I know, I'm weird that way. ... I have to say, not being able to speak is a real impediment; it's amazing how useful speaking is! Anyway, I think the voice is back now and along with the fact we got a lot of 'plumbing' work around here completed, I can concentrate on new content. Stefan
  18. Hi, All day today, no one could post to the forum ... we should be OK now. Stefan
  19. Sorry, we had server time issues today.
  20. Hi, We just launched the new video tutorial store with cosmetic and processing upgrades and was hoping to get some feedback. Thanks, Stefan
  21. I've seen this before with the slow adoption of CSS back in the late 1990's. HTML5 will only be really usable on your typical website is say 2-3 years. I wrote about this briefly: When to learn HTML5?
  22. The only problem is that you will not be able to use HTML 5 on most public websites for years ... this is because of the lack of browser adoption ... by the public that is. ... We still have 10% of the traffic still using IE6! Stefan
  23. Hi, This is easily done ... all you need: a domain name. cheap web hosting with PHP and MySQL support a free forum software - punbb, PHPBB etc a web nerd who can install and configure this for you. OR .. a little patience and you should be able to install this yourself. All forum software will allow you to make the forums private and some will even allow you to set it up so the search engines are told to not scan the forum. That said, you don't even need the forum to do this because to send this instruction to the search engines, is super easy using a simple text file called robots.txt. ... All this is, is a text file that you place on the web server and this text file tells search engines what to do; to tell the engines to NOT scan your site/forum, all you need to write is this in the text file: User-agent: * Disallow: / Stefan
