Link pruning????

I am new in seo field, will some one tell me what is "link pruning"? I just heard this word from a forum and i did not get more information about this. will you please help me?

Link pruning refers to the identification and removal of unnatural, non-organic, or generally spammy links from a link profile.In many cases, questionable link building tactics (buying links, spamming links) can result in an eventual loss of rankings.Link pruning should be considered every month. Ask yourself: What is the bottom 5 percent of links that I have in terms of quality? How can I remove these and replace them with quality links? just concentrate on quality links.

This is really great to heard new thing. & i have search on net about the same. It's all about the unnatural links from the profiel or other seo off page activites.

Basically google send massage to webmaster tool about the same...

for ranking it's required to remove links.
