benjaminmorgan
http://www.auntiemschildservices.com/Guest-Book.html The form on this page is done with ASPx i think. I don't even know what the javascript files go to and there is bad html code as well as a designed background with tables.. She is one of my friends daughter and I would like to see if her site is good or not. Thanks. Made with some editor called Vista print and she pays $280 a year. Andrea
I don't know anything about ASPx, but I'd say as long as the form does what it's supposed to do, it doesn't matter - it certainly doesn't affect the user. However, to the site - I use VistaPrint for my business cards - I don't like it one bit. The first time I looked, I only say the top part, the bottom didn't show up until I clicked one of those mystery-links in those balls on top. Overall, the page seems to load pretty slow, the navigation is tiny and one almost has to look for it, the home page doesn't really tell me what Auntie M's doing - child services what? Is that a daycare, what? I feel that a website must make its purpose clear without forcing the visitor to do some guess-work or play 'where is waldo' - and this site does not do that. Also, that the entire header portion seems to be a link to the index page is somewhat confusing. The font on the site is all over the place in all kinds of colors and sizes. bullets line up on the left while the text to go with them is far away and centered. Overall, the site looks very unprofessional - reminds me of the famous 90's Teenager with Front-page look. And the price is too high, too - one can get a hosting account for much less than this, and most hosts have wysiwyg features so something like this - hopefully much better - could be recreated. Or, your friend's daughter should check with her Mom's friend if he might be interested in improving her site for a low rate or for free as a practice project

Still don't know what the javascript links too.
falkencreative
Keep in mind, however, is that the client probably chose VistaPrint because of the website builder functionality -- allowing them to easily update the content. Yes, the design and code may not be all that great, but if you are going to offer an alternative, you'd better make sure you can duplicate the functionality. Andrea
Keep in mind, however, is that the client probably chose VistaPrint because of the website builder functionality -- allowing them to easily update the content. Excellent point. You could use this opportunity to practice your Wordpress-templates-from-scratch skills - or at the very least, clean up what they did in VistaPrint - I think at least some of my earlier points are pretty valid. Alternatively, if you get to redo the site for them, I'd suggest you start from scratch instead of trying to fix this mess. As to the JavaScript you're asking about, if you click on the link to it in the CSS, it opens up, I just don't understand it. If I had to guess, I'd say it's something internal related to the client account with vistaprint; and if I'm right, you don't need it if you'll be hosting somewhere else. And I just saw that that Auntie M is located in my town - we might even be neighbors
benjaminmorgan
What do you mean wordpress from scratch skills?
Andrea
Creating your very own Wordpress template for your site - Wordpress is a good way to allow your clients to modify content by themselves.
benjaminmorgan
I will have to look into it. Does the user login as admin? If they do they could try to install something by themselves and screw it up right? or do they have an account with just editing the pages priveleges? Andrea
You don't have to give them admin access - set them up their own account and limit it. And just to be save, always have a backup of your theme files and database - everything else you can just re-install should something go wrong. And a Wordpress site does not even have to look like a blog site - it can look like a regular website.
benjaminmorgan
Okay, Thanks I will definately be checking it out. I have never tried a CMS before.
