  1. Apples and wine don't mix.

  2. So I had a few friends over for some holiday celebration, and for the special occasion, the white wine was a flowing. Being a nerd, I had to show my guests a funny video I found on Youtube. When I placed the laptop on my coffee table beside my wine glass, I briefly noticed that I broke my 15 year old rule: never place a glass of anything beside a computer. ... I then karate-chopped a full glass of wine right into the keyboard. Being a little tipsy, I didn't remember the first rule of spilling liquids on electronics: turn off the power. So, I left the power on and a few hours later, I noticed that the laptop shut down and would not come back on. A few days later at the local Apple store, I got the sad news that it would cost $1000+ to repair my 18 month old machine. "It's dead Jim." Moving to the Cloud I have plenty of backups and even the Apple Time Capsule for wireless auto backup. Nonetheless, without a Mac, I was not able to access anything since Time Capsule is Mac formatted. It would take days until my new Macbook Air arrived, so I fired up the old XP machine and started my migration to the cloud ... Step 1: Move to Gmail. Step 2: Use Amazon cloud services for backups. Lessons to Learn 1. Don't drink and compute. 2. Use the 'cloud' so you are not reliant on any machine for your day-to-day operations. Use web based email like Gmail or Yahoo and use a remote storage service like Amazon's cloud to store backup files. This way, if your house burns down or you spill wine on your laptop, you know that your data will be up-to-date and accessible from any computer ... even your old XP machine. Stefan

  4. Are you talking about a board that only advanced members can post and read? Stefan
  5. Ahh ... the pernicious government continues to do their thing: 'Net Neutrality' makes a first cut into the free Web. My blog post on this ... with an interesting video. ... No, it's not a video of me - that's why it's interesting!! Stefan
  6. No. Ben has it right. The client was involved in the process and it is more a service than anything else really ... I should mention that for reasons such as this (with new clients ...) you should always get part of the payment upfront - say 50%. Stefan
  7. Eddie, If you look at the bottom of the forum, you will find a select box where you can choose themes. Check out the Killersites side menu for example. Stefan
  8. ... I'm guessing it is the forum theme. How about the video library for example? I am about to take another look at it to see if we can organize the content a little better. Maybe some of you may see some holes in the content perhaps? ... Any video topics you might be interested in? Stef
  9. Hi, It always good to get other peoples opinion on things. So in the spirit of the coming new year, is there anything in killersites that sucks or is there something that you think is missing? I appreciate all feedback ... especially new ideas and criticisms!! As someone I know used to say: "... Yes-men are useless!" Thanks and merry Xmas - if applicable. Stefan

  11. Hi, If you are using the XML document as the database for your product list, you could do either of the following: 1. Create another XML file for your other product category and then in each product page, you would load the correct/corresponding xml document. 2. You can add an extra element to the product nodes and call it 'category' - giving each item a category. Then in your product pages, you would then modify the function to load products from the XML document based on category. So you would need to add that argument to the function's signature. ... Does that make sense? Stefan
  12. I'm cool. working on a new course.

  13. Hi, This is less a problem of programming and more of strategy: Unless you are generating a unique image every time to page is loaded, why not just use a static image? ... Or maybe have a folder of images and just load those randomly every time the page loads. Images are automatically cached by the web browser regardless. I hope that helps, Stefan
  14. Private colleges bilking students get on my nerves!

  15. Hi, I was playing with the Galaxy tab recently and I have to admit that I was reasonably impressed - I'd say 86.4% impressed. So along with iPad, iPhone and Android phones, we are now looking at a pretty big group of people on the Web using these new types of Web surfing devices. I think web designers will have to take notice. ...HTML5 and CSS3 comes to mind. Fortunately though, if you are using standard HTML 4 and CSS2, your pages will look fine on all these devices. HTML5 and CSS3 just take things to a whole new level. Anyone developing for iPads or Android devices around here yet? Stef
  16. Well, my buddy just bought the MacBook Air and it runs cool and quite. I should point out, though it has a relatively wimpy CPU, for day to day tasks like opening apps etc ... it is amazingly fast. ... That SSD again. Stefan
  17. It's that little bit of snappiness that has a cumulative impact at the end of the day. Stef
  18. SSD boot drives havw been a dream of mine since the late 1990's ... at that time, it was just a ram-disk pipe-dream! I'm probably going to wait until April when the new line of Macs come out, because Apple doesn't drop prices but they do upgrade hardware on their machines every year. So I am thinking that the 256GB option might become a 512GB SSD option. Stefan
  19. Hi, I was thinking about getting an iMac with the SSD option. Right now, they offer the 256GB SSD: 256GB Solid State Drive ... But it is an extra $750!! Ben, did you buy your SSD from Apple and install it yourself? Stefan
  20. Ben ... SSD for your Mac?

      falkencreative

Yep. We'll see what sort of performance boost it gives me. I did see videos online that showed a boot sequence plus the launching of five large Adobe applications. A Mac with a "normal" drive booted/launched the applications in a bit over a minute, while the SSD was less than half of that.

  21. Funny, I'm allergic to cougars.

  22. Hi, Pay less attention to the way it looks and more to the labels that tell you about the rows and columns ... I think it will make more sense then. Let me know. Stefan
  23. Hi, We update and replace videos as it is needed. So the videos that you see from a few years ago, are still there because they are still good. ... For example, the PHP basics videos haven't been changed since the basics of PHP haven't changed since I created them. I hope that makes sense. Stefan
  24. Thanks for posting the solution. I should have pointed that out in the video - you should always checks versions (of PHP, MySQL etc ..) you are running. Stefan
