daddyalfie Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Is there an "Icon Maker" software that you people have used and prefer? I would like to customize some of my folder icons in some of the MS windows so that some of them are easier to spot in a long list. Thanks! Alfie Quote
falkencreative Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 I'm assuming you are talking more about customizing the icons, and less about actually "creating" icons (which would probably be done in Adobe Illustrator.) You can find various icon sets here http://www.iconarchive.com/ and changing a folder icon (at least in Windows XP?) is as simple as right clicking on the folder, selecting "Properties" > "Customize" and the "Change Icon" button. daddyalfie Posted July 1, 2011 Author Report Posted July 1, 2011 Good link Ben, thank you! I was actually thinking of creating my own, and as I have an early version of "Illustrator" I shall explore that route. What I do not know is what dimensions to create it in. I would assume something like 15x10 pixels at 72ppi. For now I have chosen one of the standard choices (A star) to do the trick. Much obliged! Alfie Quote
falkencreative Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 For information about Windows XP icons, take a look here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms997636.aspx. I'm not sure about Windows Vista/7, but I'm sure some searching should allow you to find additional resources. In regards to icon design, one comment that I guess I never included above... Icons are usually created in Illustrator, since that is vector based and will scale easily. For the finalized version and actual creation of .ico versions, you would usually take that file, import it into Photoshop, and optimize for smaller file sizes.
