All browsers know what a doctype is. If there is no doctype given, they revertto qhat is known as quirks mode and there lies the road to eternal head-bashing and broken web pages, in IE. See here for the code to use http://www.alistapart.com/articles/doctype/ you should be using strict HTML 4.01
