Adding an icon to the address bar

I have been trying to find out how to add an icon for my site to display in the browser's address bar. I don't know what this is called, so I don't know where to look for info. If anyone could point me in the direction of some good knowledge I would appreciate it.

They are called favicons (favorit icons) and the main one in the root directory must be called favicon.ico although you can have secondary icons for other pages. All must have .ico extension.
