Read a description of forum sofware here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software See a list here http://www.forummatrix.org/ (perhaps not all are free) I've used phpBB 2 (it's now phpBB3) and it is quite popular and you can download themes. WOWBB and vBulletin are other popular ones. Wordpress is blog software but can be used for a forum. Most give you automatic installation of PHP and a database and you edit board names, permissions, etc. via the admin menu after installation so you shouldn't have to touch the code. The main problem with all forums is spammers. Most forums have mods to download to deal with different sorts of spam, but you may have to wait until you get a computer spambot and ask on a forum which mod is best to deal with it.
