Just wondering, what happens when online newspapers or sites such as the BBC, Washington Post, NY Times etc update their sites and change stories?

I am inclined to believe they archive them since one can always get back to those pages. Will appreciate a deeper insight on this.

They aren't really "changing stories" (removing one and adding a new one) but simply adding additional stories to the website, and (depending on how the site is designed) only the newest stories will show on the home page. I wouldn't call the old stories "archived", just not easily available from the home page, or only available through a web search or a search for that topic on the news website itself.
