Chinese fonts online

Hello!

I'm a noob who knows the basics of graphic design for print, and absolutely nothing about web design whatsoever!

Recently, someone asked me to help them design the visual layout for a personal website. They want to use a Chinese font called Adobe Fangsong Std R for body type, and I'm not sure if this is a good idea. From what I understand, this font is capable of displaying in Western alphabet and Chinese characters, depending on your computer's settings. What I need to know is: if you create a webpage displaying type with the Western glyphs of a Chinese font, is it going to show up in your web browser as Western glyphs or Chinese glyphs? What determines the behaviour of Chinese and related fonts online?

Any information/ advice, preferably without jargon, would be much appreciated!
