which site map is better html or xml?

Can somebody explain which site map is better from users and search engine point of view and how.

An XML sitemap is helpful to search engines only, since users won't be able to use an XML sitemap. An HTML sitemap is useful to both users and search engines.

I think both site maps are best for an SEO friendly website. Because HTML site map is for user and XML site map is for Crawler.
