Keywords

I have been reading a bit on the web regarding SEO and the use of keywords.

When they mention "keywords", do they mean the words listed in the meta-tags

(<meta name="keywords". . .>), or do they mean key words in headers etc.? Or both?

Thanks! Alfie

Depends on the search engine. Typcially, the meta tag haven't been used much but that doesn't mean you should not use them.

Keywords are anything that is relative to the page and of value for search engines.

So be sure to have good keywords within the content using proper tags such as <h1>, <h2>, <p>, etc. for search engines like Google.

In a nutshell, whatever keywords you put in your meta tag be sure to have them within the content as well. If "widget" is one of your meta keyword then add that to your content like this:

I have a brand new widget for sale.

Applying a noindex robot tag will only prevent most spiders from indexing your page. So using it is not recommended unless you would to block a page.

A better way is to use robot.txt file. You can allow and disallow whatever files/folders you desire.

I used the robot text file all the time, just remember that it is a suggestion, that file will not keep spyders etc out, it tells them not to go in but can't keep them from doing. I always hid folder with a "_" (underline) at the beginning of the name as well.

You have to remember two things when it comes to keywords. These words are QUALITY, CONSISTENCY, PRACTICALITY. Quality means you will use keywords that are really applicable to your content and readers and not just for search engines. Consistency means you use keywords on title, meta, content. Practicality means you will not stuff keywords rather you will place it on a strategic and effective way.

Hi Alfie ,

Its really pleasure as you are quite interested to know about seo. The term keywords in seo means the words which a user use to search web content. If a website contain that keywords then it comes in search results and because of this reason, most of the seo specialist use keywords in Metatags as well as in web content. Here Metatags include Meta Keywords and Meta Description and besides this Title is also used to insert keywords, as these all elements are crawled and indexed by search engines.

Google is changing the way the evaluate rankings in a significant way now. I've noticed some interesting changes over the last few months, that should change the SEO game to a certain extent.

Over optimization is part of the equation now. A lot of SEO 'experts' are behind the curve when it comes to that ... meta-tags and stuff like that are not that important any more.

Keyword is most important element in seo.

Keywords are the most important SEO element for every search engine, they are what search strings are matched against.

Seriously?

Not since...ohhh... 2002 or so. It is based on content after the porn industry used keywords that did not fit the content.

Unless you simply mean descriptive words in the content, then yes, but the term keywords usually defines the keyword element in the headers.

Next to that... what is with all this old fashioned keyWORD thinking? How many people search using single words? Use Phrases like the user would use. Not "accessible design", or "web design" but Phrases like "Accessible web design in Juneau Alaska."

When we talk about keywords we actually talk about both meta keywords as well as keywords important in your content. Meta keywords are not given any importance by Google but there are other search engines which give little importance to them . But the keywords in your content are very important because that is the way your site will be indexed and searched for.Avoid keyword stuffing. :)
