Browser Compatibility - How Do You Check it?

Hi all,

I am starting to get serious about designing websites from scratch the right way instead of just using templates or certain pieces of software to do it for me.

However, I want to know how to check how my website looks and feels in different browsers. I know I can download a bunch of the latest versions of different types of browsers but I am particularly interested in older versions of IE such as IE6 or IE7.

I also know I can use places like browsershots but I want to actually be able to click around and test the functionality and the way it looks on a live site, rather than just a screen shot.

I have done a lot of searching on this in the past but not found anything conclusive.

in google it comes up with http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE but I have downloaded that on a few occasions and it just doesn't seem to work. Maybe it did in the past, but it doesn't seem to work anymore, after installation I get an error message when I try to run it.

While searching on this forum I came across http://finalbuilds.edskes.net/iecollection.htm which looks promising and I have downloaded it and installed it but all it seems to have done so far is change me from IE8 to IE7 it doesn't give me the option to view a few different versions as I was expecting. It is probably something I am doing wrong, but don't know what.

How do you experts do it? As I say, I want to be able to run multiple versions on one computer and actually be able to use different browsers not just see screen shots, since screen shots don't tell the picture of when something is clicked etc, where it gets messed up.

I have a mac, so I have access to the Mac versions of Firefox/Safari/Opera, etc. For Windows, I run a virtualized copy of Windows XP that runs MultipleIE (for IE6) and IE8 (with IE7 in compatibility mode). Ideally, I could be running individual vertualized copies of Windows and test each browser natively (Microsoft offers preactivated copies of WindowsXP with various versions of IE for testing purposes: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en), but the setup that I have at the moment seems to work OK.

I think I remember reading that MultipleIEs has issues running on Windows Vista or Windows 7, so that might be why you are running into issues?
