Uploading a new site

Hello all,

 

I'm currently working on a new website for my brother-in-law. He has a site live at the moment and i'm creating a totally new one for him. I want to upload it to the server to test it properly but will this affect his search ranking? Should I set the pages to no robots? Is this the correct way to go about it or should I be doing it another way?

It will be contained in a totally seperate folder on his server with no links between the old and new site.

Yea I do it this way all the time. Important thing to remember though is to:

 

Disallow: /folderName/

 

in robots.txt which should sit in the root folder of your website.
