There are several different ways to specify color values in CSS, the best known are with color names and color numerical values. But there are two other ways you can define colors in CSS 3 and once you understand how you can define your colors you'll have more options available in your color palette. Learning to put together colors in a harmonious fashion is one of the most important skills of a Web designer. Once you understand color theory, you'll be better equipped to create color schemes that really work.

Color symbolizes many things to different cultures, but it is easy to forget this when designing a Web site. If you use color on your site, then you should be aware of the different meanings different cultures attach to color.

These tips for using color include color shorthand, finding color triads quickly, and whether or not you should use the browser safe color palette. Using color names may be well-known, but is not the ideal solution - and limiting. Hex colors and/or RPG Colors are the most useful.

I would hope that any webdesigner who has been building sites for years has been using CSS for years. What baffles me is that there are still so many out there who believe that XHTML is some new standards -it's not. For a regular website, HTML4.01 strict is the ideal doctype - Read up on it in one of our stickies: HTML or XHTML

Oh I love these really helpful first time posters who pass out their version of the standard generic knowledge of web design in an attempt to spam us.

Guess what, you do not need XHTML to use CSS, HTML works just fine and as said, HTML should be used and not XHTML. Also agree that no developer worth his salt uses named colors.

CSS3 is not a standard yet.

...and whether or not you should use the browser safe color palette.

Not! The author of the color safe palette said herself back in 2002 or so that there is no reason for it now, even the cheapest graphic cards support full color ranges. Bit outdated that one.

Funny that color and navigation are important, what about usability, accessibility, error free code, standards... all that effect the use before anyone gets to the color.

*sigh*

Try participating in a forum before you spam it, you are preaching off key to the choir.
