is using HTML table really that bad?

I found so many advises on the internet suggesting not to use HTML table as much as possible.

Some of them even suggest to avoid HTML table at all costs.

Is using HTML table really that bad? Do I need to totally abandon HTML table even only to create a very simple tabular data?

I understand that using HTML table to create website layout could cause some problems. But for creating tabular data?

Tables are meant to be used to present tabular data - so that's perfectly appropriate to use them then. They just should no longer be used for layout. Pre-CSS, there wasn't much else (for layout) - but now we have CSS and positioning.

If I may seek your advise further: do you also use CSS exclusively to layout image?

Suppose there are 8 images (e.g. 90 x 90 pixels) I need to arrange in 4x2 matrix.

Should I use CSS or HTML table to do that?

It's not tabular data - so use CSS. If you float them, and you use a div wide enough to accommodate what it needs to hold - things should fall in place nicely.
