kralcx Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I have a quick question. I want to put some text on my website; for example my mailing address and phone number. If I make my phone number an image instead of text, will this keep my phone number away from the google robots? P.S. I eventually will get a separate business phone number, but for now I'd rather not have my personal number show up in a google search engine. Thanks in advance.
falkencreative Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Yes, using an image would be one way to protect your number (assuming you don't provide alt text) though obviously the image iteself may show up in search engines. Keep in mind that it won't be very accessible though. Someone with vision problems or who might be using a screenreader which doesn't show images won't be able to see/hear the image.
newseed Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 One of the best thing you can do is to have your phone number listed only on your contact page and then use robot.txt file to disallow that contact page from being access by the search engines. This will still allow accessibility for those that are dependent on visual technologies.
kralcx Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Thank you both. I'll try putting my number just on the contact page with a disallow robot.txt file.
