Adult Bailout

WASHINGTON (CNN) ? Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

?The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,? said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. ?The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.?

Francis said in a statement that ?the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

?We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,? he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger ? DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

 Maybe in Germany, but Americans are to Prude to agree to this!

Just imagine... Like the James Gardner Movie "Support you local sheriff"...

"Honey, I am going out for a few hours. I decided to sacrifice and go support my local prostitute who is in a financial chrisis I feel I should help her out with."

"Debbie does Dallas... for food stamps"

"Eastern Europeans smuggling American women into Russia as they get 'Laid off over here'"

"Porn DVD's in the $5.- bin at Wall Mart"

"Prostitutes going door to door to offer women their services to serve the man so the wife can have a night off!"

"Husband comes home and a musculer man wearing nothing but a G-string serves dinner wearing a bow tie... husband looks confused so wife explain giggling that he is a Giggalo she found on the street and offered him some money to play man servant for a while as she is tired of doing it everyday."

The possibilities are endless. But truth told, their is serious money in adult entertainment and lots of jobs from the women to the janitors and maids in such houses. I knew a German camerman who used to work in Bablesberg (German Holywood) until he was laid off and the only work he found was cameraman in pornos. They have as many crew lots of time as "Real Films." Their are thousands upon thousands of jobs supporting the adult industry that could be affected, movie staff, magazine staff... you name it. Then if the magazines fold the ink and paper makers loose money. Video stores loose money can could la off employees... it may not be the auto industry, but it is bigger than it sounds.

As some of you may know, amongst some others, I am a landlord and a childcare provider. Just a little example how this economic thing has hit everyone.

For the last two years my wife and I have been maxed out here in our daycare (12 kids), with a long waiting list. Now, going on six months now, we have only 8 kids (3 of which are part-time) with zero phone calls. Before, for the last five years, the phone would ring all day - almost irratatingly so!

My income property: Before, I would not even have to put a sign up in order to rent it out. Just an ad on Craigslist and I would get 40 phone calls the first day. Now - nothing! The only calls are loosers and looky-lews.

So apparently, no one is buying houses, or renting, or working (therfore needing daycare). So I guess, everyone one is living in a cave somewhere, not working, and living off top-romin or something. Weird...

I can always get myself out of a jam if I "had" to, so I'm really better off than most I presume. But I refuse to touch any of my nest-egg. So, this is probably the last month I can pay my bills by myself. My parents may be filling in the gap for a while if things don't turn around soon. Sucks!!!

The adult industry is suffering across the board. With the exception of a number of designers out there who are getting a ton of requests.

Apparently people feel that it might be a viable way to supplement their income and some on the design end may well use that and take advantage of it to a degree. I wouldn't be surprised to see an influx of new entertainers trying their hand at things...

The problem is that they don't realize that those currently working in the industry are already struggling in various ways.

And this might really seem trivial to many but I am going to put this in perspective:

Client/Consumer spends money on Adult industry.

Entertainer spends income on:

Food

Shelter (rent/mortgage)

Clothing (Often amounts most would never fathom and in all types of clothing from more risqu? to every day clothing)

Electronics (Phones, Computers, Hand held devices, Entertainment Systems, Digital Media)

Transportation (Cars, Transit, Taxis, Planes, Trains, Etc.)

Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Then comes the advertising and marketing dollars which in turn affect thousands of designers, a huge number of office/administrative staff, account managers with advertising resources, etc. And those people in turn would have spent the money they made on:

Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.

And then you need to look at the retail staff who worked on commissions, or even a base fixed pay... The money is not being spent by the entertainers, the money is not being spent by those in the advertising and marketing industries... The income will not justify having 6 employees (arbitrary number) but rather only being able to provide hours for 4... So there are 2 jobs lost.

And what might those 2 people do? If they are female, and remotely reasonable looking someone might just suggest they turn around and possibly supplement their income and while that might only happen for 1 in every 200-400 people... That is a lot of people who are considering the industry...

Which brings us back to issue 1:

The adult industry is suffering across the board. With the exception of a number of designers out there who are getting a ton of requests.

Apparently people feel that it might be a viable way to supplement their income and some on the design end may well use that and take advantage of it to a degree. I wouldn't be surprised to see an influx of new entertainers trying their hand at things...

The worst part is that it will become worse by way of the prolific profiteering, and rate cutting that the designers who deal with more adult content already face. So those nickel and dime proposals, and badly coded sites will pepper the net...

So in the end we all suffer.

Just some additional perspective.

ROFL - If New York maybe Thelma... but in Texas, Larry the cable Guy in a G-String and cap is the best your likely to get!

Course in Alaska it would likely be someone who looks like that "Mountain Man" in the TV show of the 70's with his pet Grizzley. ;)

This is a *good* thing for people who are good at what they do.

When badly coded sites become the norm, correct, efficient sites will be set apart in the consumer's eye. Web developers may become a dime a dozen, but good web developers will be worth their weight in gold. Successful sites - those with the money to spend - will be looking for a way to differentiate themselves. With their only face to the customer being their website, a well-run site will be at a premium.

"Any Money?"

Looks like I jumped the gun a little - just paid all the bills - still in the game! I just had a woes-me moment.

Not yet I don't. I let it go a couple years back to pursue other things (like web design for one). Plus, it was getting too hard to juggle with my main job (watching 12 kids - or 8 rather - plus my own 2). So now, I'm making the phone calls, getting it going again. Originally, I didn't want to make a comeback untill my balding head matched my ageing face (like around 55 yrs old or so), but, gota do what you gota do...

Funny you should mention baldness - a coworker of mine looked over my should when I was browsing your sites, and is trying to get me to hook her up with you :) She has a thing for bald guys.

I'm on the other side of your spectrum. I have a "real job", but I'm trying to get a web design firm off the ground, both as a fun thing (and side money), and as an insurance policy against job cuts in this economy.

I see your point and I agree with you to a point.

I'd like to say I think it could be a positive thing but in truth I know that once burned, twice shy so what about all those clients who need a new design after getting shafted and don't want to deal with any of us?

Again... It justifies the more skilled designers higher rates should they want to charge them but it also means that clients will get burned and think less of the industry as a whole.

Time for a mini-thread-jack!

Ok... You guys just totally stunned me... I was like... What? Then I googled... All I have to say is: How did I miss this?

I mean... I was on the phone with someone at the time whom I use to know from when I had a functional portfolio (ironically she still does a lot of print work, etc. herself but I do not) and I was totally stuck on silly for not having paid attention and realized who you are outside of this before. Truthfully I focused on you skill set here, and never questioned the "before". I find I do this often... I also know that there are some interesting and diverse past histories and backgrounds around here.

Eric... From my own perspective I would say - Go back to it. There is a market for a variety of looks as you well know but right now they seem to be having talent issues. Either they have the look and can't work with the camera, or they can work with the camera and don't have the look. I know the hours it involves, and the time and energy it involves all too well but if you can... Then do.

Truthfully I was suppose to be rebuilding my own portfolio again because I didn't have to be able to code or create graphics to pose... But as of Dec. 12th that is on hold again. I'm lucky my face is mostly back to where it was but for photos... Not even close. I was never main stream like you but there is good money in it if you fill a niche and I did/do.
