  1. I thought the 'picture' looked much better than a plain margin but I will go with your suggestion. My plan was to give the 'contact page' a different background color from the other pages but I couldn't figure out how to do that without affecting the other pages plus I did not want to create a different style sheet/page for it at that time. I will tone down on the 'comments' eventually, as a complete noob, it helps me find my way around plus it is like a new toy. I do appreciate all your help especially when I look at what the first site I put up looked like. Thanks.
  2. A complete noob to Web Design. Got curious about it and decided to learn.

  3. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Are you referring to the background image on the contact page when you say, "The repeating bread/grain background image is ..." I couldn't figure out how to style that page with a different color so I decided to use a 'class' for that.
  4. I will appreciate reviews on my updated site w ww w lookupyoursite.com. Basically, I wanted some practice with page layout and drop-down menus so I decided to do something new with my old practice site. Watching CSS videos and reading etc does not yield results unless you practice. I have validated the HTML and CSS and corrected the errors with the exception of one CSS error that I will look into later. I really learned the importance of 'vanishing bullets', filling out your spaces (%20 error) and probably installing a code validator on your PC or putting up your site and checking for errors as you work. I have a lot of 'text filling' on a few pages and I will work on those later due to time limitation. Thanks.
  5. Thanks, will check out those links in a little while. Basically, I want to be able to use bullets as I have done here, http://www.lookupyoursite.com/web/events.html instead of the paragraph tag like I did here, http://www.lookupyoursite.com/web2/recipes.html for the recipe page. I don't recall how I was able to get the 'list' to work on the events.html page but I struggled with the same issue of the bullet tabs showing up in the margin as shown in the little attached image. I think the padding is affecting it. Thanks again.
  6. I am having a problem with creating a simple list. Basically, the bullets are showing up in the margin instead of within the 'MAIN' page. I think it might have something to do with the padding since my list items work/display well in a raw page or a page with no layout applied. I have attached a jpeg. The site or page is not ready to be put up yet hence I can't provide a link. I will like to use bullets instead of paragraphs. Thanks <ul> <li>The books</li> <li>The tables</li> <li>The car</li> <li>The train</li> </ul> * { margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } #main { width: 960px; } h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, p { padding-right: 30px; padding-left: 45px; padding-bottom: 10px; }
  7. Andrea ROCKS! I have thought about that too but I think the uniqueness, content, layout, ease of use and simplicity etc of a site are key factors that will draw people to your site. I am a noob so you know ...
  8. I finally figured it out. I recreated the drop down menus on a properly designed layout page, renamed the links and used the usual 'save as' method etc to create my pages and it turned out fine. It can be a bit confusing and it takes time to get used to for a newbie like me.
  9. Thanks for your answer. I did not state my question clearly. I have changed my question and I hope it is much clearer now. Your comments has shown me that I can even style each link individually. The CSS life is not easy for a newbie like me.
  10. I will be very thankful for a detailed instruction on how to create regular HTML pages for drop down menus. I finally managed to gain a better understanding on how to create CSS drop down menus but I can't figure out how to create html pages with the links like we usually do. For instance, how do I create a page for Link Item #2 or 3 etc. I am confused because the 'child links' are hidden etc. I have tried the regular 'save as' way for creating a single link, done some searches and tried different things to no avail. Maybe, Am I trying too hard ...? Here is a link to it, http://www.lookupyoursite.com/DropDownMenu/DropdownTest/drpdwntest1.html Thanks in advance for your help.
  11. Personally, I like Ipage, have been using it for almost two months now. I like their customer service a lot. I haven't graduated to WordPress yet but I do use Dreamweaver CS5 which is a very useful tool for learning how to create and understand page layouts etc. There are some very useful material in the video store on this site. I have been playing around with the 'Coffee Cup' free HTML editor for the past 3 days and it looks very promising, plus it free.
  12. All I wanted to do was try my hands on a couple of things that I had read and watched etc. For page layout, I used a single and double column layout with the horizontal navigation menu, a little Photoshop and Adobe Flash and basically tried a couple of things. The site is hosted by Ipage, http://www.ipage.com/ipage/index.html and they currently have a $2.95 promotion running. Their Customer Service guys are awesome and helpful. Hope this helps.
  13. Thanks, will use it next time. Andrea was kind enough to help with some very, very useful suggestions. I am working on updating it, changing the layout etc. You should have seen it on day one.
  14. Thanks, I will keep your suggestions in mind and be a little more patient. It is just that sometimes changes show up immediately and sometimes it takes a while.
  15. I am new to all this myself and I am trying to do something similar. I don't know the kind of images you want to put up but you can try 'Adobe Bridge' in Photoshop. You can create different galleries and then embed each gallery in its own 'div box', change pictures etc and save it without any problems. I have tried this on my practice site, http://www.lookupyoursite.com/web2/fall-breads.html I also found something pertaining to images here (yet to try anything from that page), http://www.squidoo.com/graphics-layout. I will like to be able to put up images side by side without 'breaking my page/layout' but it is all a working progress.
  16. What is the best way to upload updated web pages on the ftp/web server? I am having a problem with some of my changes not showing up immediately. I have tried putting up the entire site, updated pages, cleaning my internet cache because things do not show up like I think they should etc. I think I am missing something and will appreciate any information on the best way to do this. Thanks in advance for all responses.
  17. Good news! I took a major step today with my 'web design hobby' My practice/test site is now up and running. Just wanted to see what it would look like on the internet. It is a working progress and I have to do some more work on it. Please visit my site at www.lookupyoursite.com Killersites have some really good stuff! Thanks.
  18. Thanks, just signed up with ipage. I now have a domain name etc and will soon 'put' up my site if I feel bold enough.
  19. ipage (www.ipage.com) currently has a promotion going on for $2.95 cents/month. I just signed up with them. I like the customer service they offer and a couple of people have recommended them on this site. Either way, it comes down to how much you want to spend and what the site is meant for. Their promotion has about 14 hours to go.
  20. I am torn between Ipage and Hostgator for web hosting services. Will appreciate some opinions on this. Thanks as always for your input.
  21. Thanks, will keep it in mind for future practice and use. Seems a little bit confusing now for a newbie like me.
  22. I am working on a two-column page layout design and I have a question about adding what I like to think of as a 'flexible border' between the two columns. Basically, adding a border between the two columns works fine even though I have to reduce the width of one of the divs/boxes to do this successfully. The problem I have is that the border hangs or does not touch the footer depending on the content in the box and the side that the border was created on. Varying the location of the border based on the content is manageable. Also, I can do away with the border completely but I am wondering if there is a way to create a 'floating border' that will work like a 'floating footer'. Thanks in advance for all responses. I
