  1. Hi all,

    I have created a new charity website and I am trying to fix somethign on one of the pages.

    I have content with an image beside it then a horizontal line underneath it, what is happening is depending on what browser you are using and depending at what browser you are using and other settings, sometimes the images are ending up in the line, above the line, below the line etc. I want things to stay i in places they should be no matter what browser or device they are watching it on.

    I am not good at website design and in the old days I just used to put everything in a table and that would normally fix the issues, but this is an important charity site and I want to do everything correctly.

    I think I need to put each section i.e. text with associated image and horizontal line into some kind of box or container system. But I am not sure.

    Please can someone help. We launched the site on Wednesday and have just noticed this issue.

    One of the main problem pages is:

    (Deleted link because I didn't get a response to questions and didn't want to keep my url up here)

    Thanks

    Joe

  2. Hi

    I am creating a blog for a charity and I can't afford to get it wrong.  I am not an expert on wordpress by any means so the most important thing for me is to make sure I have solid backups.  What is the best software or plugin if I am creating a site that I can't afford to go down and not be able to restore.

    I don't mind paying, I just need the most reliable. I am thinking vaultpress or Backup Buddy,.

    Any advice would be great. I am not technical and I just need something I can just pretty much set and forget and trust it's doing it's job and if there is an issue with my site I just click a couple of buttons to restore.

    Below are the backup softwares I have seen online but what is the best and most reliable?

    1. VaultPress

    2. Backup Buddy

    3. Backwpup

    4. Backupwordpress

    5. Updraftplus

    6. Duplicator

    7. WP-DB-Backup

    8. Backup Scheduler

    9. Blog Vault

    10.Complete Central Backup

    11. Myrepono

  3. Hi Ben,

    Long time no speak to. I am sure you answered a bunch of questions for me like 3 - 4 years ago.

    Thanks. Yep, that is what I was referring to. I was hoping it was something I could adjust i.e. maybe something in a file just needed to be above something else to load first. I have just refreshed the MSN home page and I can see that big images are taking a lot longer to load.

    So that I can eliminate it, is there no way it could be something that can be adjusted to make it better. I know images will load second but maybe there is something in the specific files to make the images load more quickly.

    What do you think?

  4. Hi all,

    I have a wordpress query.

    I am using a theme called the Hueman theme.

    I am not having much joy getting answers to a question on the Wordpress forum so thought I would try to get help here because it's probably quite general.

    I have a site I am setting up similar the the site below, which also uses the Hueman them:

    http://viajarataiwan.es/

    If you look at the site you will see that the content below the featured images slider at the top of the front page loads before the images. Does anyone know of an easy way to get the Image to load first. I think it maybe something in the functions php file, but not sure.

    Any help would be gratefully received.  :(

  5. To be honest, this isn't something I have any experience with. My impression is that you can't really do what you have in mind -- I think the "window.onbeforeunload" gets called any time a window gets changed, and the only way you can skip this function is adding the "throughlink()" function to all links.

    Okay, Thanks

  6. Hi,

    I am trying to set up an exit popup script so that when someone clicks on exit/close a page pops up in the background giving them an option to stay on the page for a special gift of some kind.

    Once you have the script installed just below the </body> tag then you are supposed to be able to but the following code on any outgoing link so that it doesn't prompt the pop-up. onSubmit="throughlink()"

    However, I have tried this and as yet, I can't get it to work. Does anyone know of a code I can put into outgoing links so that they do not trigger the popup when clicked on?

    Or of an alternative way to do what I want to do?

    Here is the javascript for the popup.

    <script type="text/javascript">

    <!--

    var allowPrompt = true;

    done = false;

    window.onbeforeunload = WarnUser;

    function throughlink(){

    throughlink = true;

    }

    function WarnUser()

    {

    if(allowPrompt && throughlink !=true && done !=true)

    {

    done = true;

    // Place your upsell URL here

    document.location = " ******* exit page url goes here******** ";

    var message = "WAIT! WAIT! Don't leave empty handed... ";

    return message;

    }

    else

    {

    // Reset the flag to its default value.

    allowPrompt = true;

    }

    }

    window.setTimeout("resetdone()", 1000);

    function resetdone(){

    done = false;

    }

    function NoPrompt()

    {

    allowPrompt = false;

    }

    // -->

    </script>

  7. I think the site has potential, but as everyone else has said, it needs a little work. Personally, I don't like all the text as it is on the home page. I like home pages that are more bullet point orientated and then if you want more specific info on a certain section or topic, you click the relevant section.

    As it is, the site seems a bit disjointed.

  8. That white space is caused by using position:relative. Using position:relative means that the browser still leaves space for the content, and then moves it based on it's natural position in the document.

    To fix this, I would move your #photos div within #headwrap, and then use position:absolute instead of relative. Position:absolute will take those elements out of the document flow completely (leaving no empty space anywhere) and then use a top/left value to position them. Make sure that #headwrap uses position:relative, since that allows elements within #headwrap with position:absolute to display in the correct location.

    Thanks for that Ben. I figured it was the positioning that was causing the problem but I just didn't know how to fix it.

    I have tried to implement what you said, but there is still a big white space, it still isn't taking it out of the flow of the rest of the page. I obviously doing something wrong. I don't know if there is some special rule for it because it is a js script. I am at a loss, I have been trying to figure it out for about 2 hours.

    Here is what I have now:

    in my css file:

    #headwrap {margin:0 auto; position:relative; width:918px; height:270;}

    #headwrap .photosmove {position:absolute; right:-26px; top:-306px;}

    In my header include:

    <div id="headwrap"><!--start head wrapper-->

    <img src="../images/FRONT_STRIP1.png" class="centre2">

    <div id="fadeshow1" class="photosmove"></div>

    </div><!--end head wrapper-->

    Can someone explain where I am going wrong and if it doesn't take them to long, just give me the amendments I need to make to fix it. In total I have been working on these two problems for over 3 hours and they now getting to me. :blink:

    I understand the concept of positioning and I have been using it to good effect for text and images but for some reason it doesn't seem to work in this situation and I don't understand why.

    Thanks

  9. "Friends" are always a difficult one and I try to avoid working on things with friends or family as a rule. However, it is very difficult when they have been asking for a while. But it hardly ever turns out well in my experience. People get very demanding when they know you personally. :angry:

    A contract, even with a "friend" is definitely the way to go in the future.

    I think you just need to be open with them and tell them how it is, in nice way. Tell them you could have finished by now if they didn't keep wanting things changed and tell them that you are prepared to finish the job but they need to give you everything they need to give you within the next 24 hours (as and example) and then let you get one with it. After you produce the final product, say there is one more edit allowed and that it is. After that he will need to use someone else.

    They are probably not going to like it, but I always find that it is better to be upfront about how you are feeling. Even if they end result isn't what you want and you are not longer "friends" or your relative's know longer speak to you, it is better for your own karma to be true to yourself.

    95% of the time I actually find when I explain things, the other person actually understands to some degree and things go easier from there.

  10. Hi all,

    I am looking for a developer to work with long-term.

    I am creating a social network using PHPfox with vbulletin as the forum. As far as I am aware they are both built with php.

    I need someone who has extensive php experience, ideally someone who has worked on phpfox and/or vbulletin either for themselves or for clients.

    With a site like this I like to have about 3 developers I work with as needed that know the programs.

    I already have one but I have a few problems that I could do with fixing and I would like someone else to come in and fix it. We would agree a rate for this job and then perhaps an ungoing price for a certain amount of hours per month. (maybe 5-10 hours)

  11. You will need to break it down some because using the image tag along with mouseover will swap the entire images.

    In a nutshell, set up your box image to not have 'GO'. Place that box image to be as a background via css instead. Now create the GO image to be used as a background for the anchor tag with the necessary width/height applied. You can then position that anchor tag to the lower right of your boxes.

    Thanks Eddie,

    The amazing thing is that what you have just said to me, two months ago it would have been like you are talking an alien language, but I actually kind of understand what you are saying and I will work this weekend on putting it into practise.

    Thanks

  12. Hi all,

    I wonder if it is okay if I ask two questions. It is? Good! :clap:

    1. If you look at my test page (at the bottom of this post) on one of my sites that I am updating you will see that I have 6 squarish boxes and the image at the bottom (the go image) changes whenever you hover over anywhere on the images. However I would like it so that it only changes when you hover over the "Go" not when you hover over the image in general.

    My guess is I will probably have to "Map" it in someway just as I would if I wanted to map a link to a particular part of an image, but I don't know how to do this one. Here is the code I am currently using for it:

    <div id="boxes">

    <div class="box1"><img src="images/1_LIGHT_BLUE1b.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/1_LIGHT_BLUE2b.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/1_LIGHT_BLUE1b.png'"></div>

    <div class="box2"><img src="images/2_ORANGE1b.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/2_ORANGE2b.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/2_ORANGE1b.png'"></div>

    <div class="box3"><img src="images/3_PURPLE1B.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/3_PURPLE2B.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/3_PURPLE1B.png'"></div>

    <div class="box4"><img src="images/4_DARK_GREEN1b.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/4_DARK_GREEN2b.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/4_DARK_GREEN1b.png'"></div>

    <div class="box5"><img src="images/5_DARK_BLUE1a.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/5_DARK_BLUE2b.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/5_DARK_BLUE1a.png'"></div>

    <div class="box6"><img src="images/6_PINK1b.png" onmouseover="this.src='images/6_PINK2b.png'" onmouseout="this.src='images/6_PINK1b.png'"></div>

    </div>

    And here is the corresponding CSS:

    #boxes {margin:0 auto; position:relative; width:100%; height:585px;}

    #boxes .box1 {position:absolute; left:5px; top:5px;}

    #boxes .box2 {position:absolute; left:320px; top:5px;}

    #boxes .box3 {position:absolute; right:5px; top:5px;}

    #boxes .box4 {position:absolute; left:5px; top:295px;}

    #boxes .box5 {position:absolute; left:320px; top:295px;}

    #boxes .box6 {position:absolute; right:5px; top:295px;}

    How do I achieve just having the change of image happen when I hover over a particular part of the image, only.

    2. I have some pictures of people that come up on a rotating bases under my navigation bar. I have placed the pictures in the spot they are in via positioning; however, because of the way I have done it it has left a big gap in my page because the page knows that there is still the javascript there. i.e. it has:

    <div id="photos">

    <div id="fadeshow1" class="photosmove"></div>

    </div>

    which relates to the pictures. The css for "photos" and "photosmove" is:

    #photos {margin:0; position:relative; width:400px; height:280px; left:36px; top:-312px;}

    #photos .photosmove {position:absolute; right:10px; top:5px;}

    Is there anyway to get the page to act as if the <div id="photos"><div id="fadeshow1" class="photosmove"></div>

    </div> was not physically there so that I will not have a big white gap in the middle of the page?

    Once you look at my page you will see exactly what I mean.

    Any help and advice would be gratefully received.

    Here is the test page:

    http://tinyurl.com/6cu4u6s

  13. What i would do is place the slideshow in a div and absolute position this where you want it on the page. Set the background image of the div to the still pic you have there already. This way if the slideshow doesn't load or someone doesn't have javascript an image will still be displayed there.

    Hope this works for you. Site looks very good btw :D

    I will try and do as you suggested. I need to just give it a bit of thought and get my head around it. Thanks for the complement on the site, it is getting there. I started off using a template but with some of the stuff I have learned here and on w3schools I have gone off and pretty much redesigned the whole thing. Still a work in motion though hopefully it will be read for launch early April.

  14. Hi all,

    I have a test page up for my site, it is:

    http://tinyurl.com/6cu4u6s

    If you look at the image of the smiling man, I want that to be an image that fades through different photos of different people.

    You can look at my home page to see exactly what I want placed in this spot. (give it about 2-3 seconds to see the picture fade into a different one)

    http://tinyurl.com/64gz6l5

    The fade effect (or whatever you want to call it) is done via javascript and I wanted to place this exact script in the spot on the test page where the still picture is; however, I have no idea how to do this If I place the javacript anywhere near the image it just pushes the image to one side.

    How would I accomplish what I need to.

    Any ideas?

  15. I just finished with my first client, who is very happy with her site. But I would like some opinion good or bad, I take criticism well. I feel that it is ok for a beginner. But of coarse I built it lol. I just feel like I could use some input from fellow designers. I have only been doing this about 18 months. I took two classes, but I learned more from this site and linda.com. Also from a friend that has been doing this for over 10 years. The site is http://www.roxanesmarine.com I have a long way to go I know, but I am hopping by mid summer I can find a job somewhere as a intern. Thank you

    Hello,

    Congratulations on your first client.

    I am not a designer so I will leave it for others to give input on that; however, the bottom left image with text: "Motors for Sale" is half way under where I think it is supposed to end. What I mean is that it is half way on the white background with the rest of content and half way on the background of water drops.

    I am using IE8.

    Was there a reason you didn't put the css in a separate file?

    Congratulations again, as with anything, I imagine the first one is the most difficult to get out the way.

  16. The first thing I would try is adding "float:left" to div#header input#search_field. I'm getting the misalignment in Firefox for the Mac as well, so that may fix IE7. I have to admit though, it looks like whatever script you are using for this site takes all of your CSS files and compresses them with gzip, so I can't really tell you exactly which CSS file includes "div#header input#search_field" -- you'll probably have to search for it.

    This might be a useful Firebug video: http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/15-introduction-to-firebug/

    Thanks Ben,

    I will play with the float:left option. I have also asked on the forum of the software developers so I am sure I will be able to figure it out soon.

    Thanks for taking the time to help.

  17. PM me the login details, and I'll take a look?

    One thing you can always do is use a conditional comment, and add a CSS style or two that affects only IE7.

    Thanks ben, I will PM you the details now. The conditional comments was exactly what I had in mind but I just couldn't locate where in the template I would put it in so it would appear on every page. I am not great with firebug and don't always know how to find where it is telling me to edit. (I must look up if there are any good firebug videos on Youtube or something. :rolleyes: )

  18. Hello all,

    I have a social network that I have created using phpfox and I have a problem that in IE7 the search box is out of alignment. I have been racking my brain for about 12 hours (no joke) over the last week trying to get it aligned properly. It is fine in IE8 just not IE7.

    The problem is that you can only see the search function if you are a member, so I can't even post a link.

    I really need help on this, since my site is now live and I am expecting an influx of visitors when I kick off my marketing next week.

    I was wondering if one of the regular experienced posters on here would be able to have a look at it for me and probably use firebug or something to figure out the right place for me to edit and exactly what to change. I have tried, but I just don't seem to be able to do it.

    I would give some login details so you could login as a basic user and see the search box.

    Help... :(

  19. Your image is 260px wide and your column 282px - either make you column less wide or your image bigger.

    If you add a distinct background color to your #content and a different one to .three_columns (not for styling, just inspection) then you can better see what you have going on there.

    Bingo,

    That solution actually came to me on my way to work this morning. I got confused because in with firebug it said one of my other images was 260px and that image seemed to span the width I wanted, but on closer inspection, I was looking at the wrong dimensions.

    Thanks
