  1. I think I should have posted this in the beginners website design. Anyway, it's in this section now. some help would be grateful received.
  2. Hi all, I have created a new charity website and I am trying to fix somethign on one of the pages. I have content with an image beside it then a horizontal line underneath it, what is happening is depending on what browser you are using and depending at what browser you are using and other settings, sometimes the images are ending up in the line, above the line, below the line etc. I want things to stay i in places they should be no matter what browser or device they are watching it on. I am not good at website design and in the old days I just used to put everything in a table and that would normally fix the issues, but this is an important charity site and I want to do everything correctly. I think I need to put each section i.e. text with associated image and horizontal line into some kind of box or container system. But I am not sure. Please can someone help. We launched the site on Wednesday and have just noticed this issue. One of the main problem pages is: (Deleted link because I didn't get a response to questions and didn't want to keep my url up here) Thanks Joe
  3. Thanks Eddie, I think I know the solution to use now. I just need to not be scared.
  4. Hi I am creating a blog for a charity and I can't afford to get it wrong. I am not an expert on wordpress by any means so the most important thing for me is to make sure I have solid backups. What is the best software or plugin if I am creating a site that I can't afford to go down and not be able to restore. I don't mind paying, I just need the most reliable. I am thinking vaultpress or Backup Buddy,. Any advice would be great. I am not technical and I just need something I can just pretty much set and forget and trust it's doing it's job and if there is an issue with my site I just click a couple of buttons to restore. Below are the backup softwares I have seen online but what is the best and most reliable? 1. VaultPress 2. Backup Buddy 3. Backwpup 4. Backupwordpress 5. Updraftplus 6. Duplicator 7. WP-DB-Backup 8. Backup Scheduler 9. Blog Vault 10.Complete Central Backup 11. Myrepono 12. Online backup for wordpress
  5. Hi Ben, Long time no speak to. I am sure you answered a bunch of questions for me like 3 - 4 years ago. Thanks. Yep, that is what I was referring to. I was hoping it was something I could adjust i.e. maybe something in a file just needed to be above something else to load first. I have just refreshed the MSN home page and I can see that big images are taking a lot longer to load. So that I can eliminate it, is there no way it could be something that can be adjusted to make it better. I know images will load second but maybe there is something in the specific files to make the images load more quickly. What do you think?
  6. Hi all, I have a wordpress query. I am using a theme called the Hueman theme. I am not having much joy getting answers to a question on the Wordpress forum so thought I would try to get help here because it's probably quite general. I have a site I am setting up similar the the site below, which also uses the Hueman them: http://viajarataiwan.es/ If you look at the site you will see that the content below the featured images slider at the top of the front page loads before the images. Does anyone know of an easy way to get the Image to load first. I think it maybe something in the functions php file, but not sure. Any help would be gratefully received.
  7. Hi, I am trying to set up an exit popup script so that when someone clicks on exit/close a page pops up in the background giving them an option to stay on the page for a special gift of some kind. Once you have the script installed just below the </body> tag then you are supposed to be able to but the following code on any outgoing link so that it doesn't prompt the pop-up. onSubmit="throughlink()" However, I have tried this and as yet, I can't get it to work. Does anyone know of a code I can put into outgoing links so that they do not trigger the popup when clicked on? Or of an alternative way to do what I want to do? Here is the javascript for the popup. <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var allowPrompt = true; done = false; window.onbeforeunload = WarnUser; function throughlink(){ throughlink = true; } function WarnUser() { if(allowPrompt && throughlink !=true && done !=true) { done = true; // Place your upsell URL here document.location = " ******* exit page url goes here******** "; var message = "WAIT! WAIT! Don't leave empty handed... "; return message; } else { // Reset the flag to its default value. allowPrompt = true; } } window.setTimeout("resetdone()", 1000); function resetdone(){ done = false; } function NoPrompt() { allowPrompt = false; } // --> </script>
  8. I think the site has potential, but as everyone else has said, it needs a little work. Personally, I don't like all the text as it is on the home page. I like home pages that are more bullet point orientated and then if you want more specific info on a certain section or topic, you click the relevant section. As it is, the site seems a bit disjointed.
  9. Hi Ben, Thanks for that. That did the trick. Now I just have to try and follow Eddie's advice to deal with the other problem. Thanks again.
  10. Thanks for that Ben. I figured it was the positioning that was causing the problem but I just didn't know how to fix it. I have tried to implement what you said, but there is still a big white space, it still isn't taking it out of the flow of the rest of the page. I obviously doing something wrong. I don't know if there is some special rule for it because it is a js script. I am at a loss, I have been trying to figure it out for about 2 hours. Here is what I have now: in my css file: #headwrap {margin:0 auto; position:relative; width:918px; height:270;} #headwrap .photosmove {position:absolute; right:-26px; top:-306px;} In my header include: <div id="headwrap"><!--start head wrapper--> <img src="../images/FRONT_STRIP1.png" class="centre2"> <div id="fadeshow1" class="photosmove"></div> </div><!--end head wrapper--> Can someone explain where I am going wrong and if it doesn't take them to long, just give me the amendments I need to make to fix it. In total I have been working on these two problems for over 3 hours and they now getting to me. I understand the concept of positioning and I have been using it to good effect for text and images but for some reason it doesn't seem to work in this situation and I don't understand why. Thanks
  11. I almost forgot. Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix the second problem I am having about the white space?
  12. "Friends" are always a difficult one and I try to avoid working on things with friends or family as a rule. However, it is very difficult when they have been asking for a while. But it hardly ever turns out well in my experience. People get very demanding when they know you personally. A contract, even with a "friend" is definitely the way to go in the future. I think you just need to be open with them and tell them how it is, in nice way. Tell them you could have finished by now if they didn't keep wanting things changed and tell them that you are prepared to finish the job but they need to give you everything they need to give you within the next 24 hours (as and example) and then let you get one with it. After you produce the final product, say there is one more edit allowed and that it is. After that he will need to use someone else. They are probably not going to like it, but I always find that it is better to be upfront about how you are feeling. Even if they end result isn't what you want and you are not longer "friends" or your relative's know longer speak to you, it is better for your own karma to be true to yourself. 95% of the time I actually find when I explain things, the other person actually understands to some degree and things go easier from there.
  13. These are pretty cool. Now all I have to do is to figure out how to change my 404 page... Off to google to search. Thanks
  14. Hi all, I am looking for a developer to work with long-term. I am creating a social network using PHPfox with vbulletin as the forum. As far as I am aware they are both built with php. I need someone who has extensive php experience, ideally someone who has worked on phpfox and/or vbulletin either for themselves or for clients. With a site like this I like to have about 3 developers I work with as needed that know the programs. I already have one but I have a few problems that I could do with fixing and I would like someone else to come in and fix it. We would agree a rate for this job and then perhaps an ungoing price for a certain amount of hours per month. (maybe 5-10 hours)
