  1. I think you can use clear:both; for the paragraph. Or add ul#gallery{overflow:auto;) If I am right and the overflow:auto works then I would use that
  2. If you just want to make your website attractive (with no other reason in mind) I would not recommend adding a bit of flash here and there. Especially if you don't know how to use flash, any tutorial or free file that you could find, I am sure it would be to basic to give the effect you have in mind I friend of mine added flash to a html/css website (at University) simply to show that he could do it, buy the end result was very bad. So unless you really know what you doing, dont bother I personally like the websites that use flash to be 100% flash. Then again javascript can give you enough "moving features" to make the pages look very attractive and (in my opinion) bits of JavaScript in a CSS &HTML site work better than a bit of flash
  3. Hi Based on the fact that I have too much to learn (in order to catch up) and the fact that is wasn't fully developed, I did not bother learning CSS3 and HTML5 in great detail, This question may have been asked before but I could not find anything useful. So are CSS3 and HTML5 ready to be used right now? Basically would it be safe to have a website written totally in CSS3 and HTML5 or are these two still to be used only if you want that extra enhancement in special cases for a selection of browsers? Thanks
  4. I like that - I will have to really think about this But just out ok interest, is there supposed to be any meaning, logical explanation, to the use of the frog for killersites? Or is it used to create the visual theme (and has nothing to do with web design)
  5. you would use them when creating a website where all the content is within one page, for example <p id="content1">some content</p> <p id="content2">some content</p> <p id="content3">some content</p> <p id="content4">some content</p> if you want to skip to content4, you would just do this (within the same page): <a href="#content4">read content for</a> ps - if you add /#post_id_28133 to the end of this pages url, you will be scrolled to this post automatically
  6. the stealing thing, I didn't express myself well, I meant the same thing you mean. Tackling the same topics as others do, put of course in my own way The domain name, I am having trouble coming up with names that is why I thought of using my name. Is there any tips/tricks on how to come up with a name?
  7. Hi I was thinking of starting a web design tutorial blog. The reason I want to start blogging is more to push myself in learning/discovering/practicing new things. The idea that "pretending" to teach others I will learn more myself. Taking that into consideration I would really appreciate your opinion on: 1) would it be ok if I hosted this blog in a domain with my name (aurelkurtula.co.uk) or would I need to think of a new name. 2) can you give me any tips on how to come up with post topic ideas? - I thought of searching around for "web tutorials for beginners" and just "steal" the titles and then writte my own tutorials, so is there any rules on how to comeup with ideas thanks
  8. Hi I heard that if you were at work (in work experience type) you could learn a great deal by looking how others work for example from watching a video tutorial, the author said "and by the way you could start collecting code snippets" (he did not plan to say that as it was not important to the tutorial) - and that was the most important thing (and what I can remember from the tutorial), also there are lots of "habbits" that I gatherd from the first few videos of wordpress 3 series in lynda.com by Chris Coyler (for example) As I am finding it very hard to find a job (after just leaving uni) I see that my productivity is very low and I don't like the fact that I don't seem to have a structure/organization. (hope so far I'm clear enough) I asked this all over the place (on and off line) and the main answer was "start asking what you need to know". Though that is harder than it sounds, how could I ask "how you guy collect code snippets" when I didn't know that existed. I do realize that this is a bit all over the place but if you could help me in some way, that be fantastic
  9. at the moment I am at the design stage, but if we take your home page as example (from the link you have assignature)and the right column did not have anything in it would it work.
  10. if this question was asked by someone else, I would think the same "confusing and redundant"; How about having the side-column black, because what I think would brake the design would be if some pages are with a content area of 550px and the others hare the full 960px for content.
  11. Hi I am creating a website which has pages of all the services the company provides, and then a shoping section which would have its own navigation. at the moment I have structured a left colum navigation, but I found that their is not a lot of consistancy on the navigation from one page to another. so I thought of having a horizontal navigation at the top linking to the main page ( home | aboutus | contact ... ) my question is, would it be ok, or a good practice if few of the links from the main (horisontal) navigation are repeated in the second navigation (as for some pages I may not need a secondary navigation but it way look good for constancy to have a second navigation) so is it ok is one of the secontary navigations had links to the about us and contact page (for example) thanks for for help
  12. designing a new wordpress theme

  13. nearly finished costumizing oscommerce theme, and will soon need to connect it to paypal

  14. thats where I started not to take notice of those comments, as the costumme theme that we now agreed with the client, will be nothing like the normal blog theme which comes with the WP but also nothing that can be found as a free or payed for template (for better or worst) - and at the end of the day is not going to be a blog and when I started with wordpress it took me a hell of a long time to really understand what was going on, a time which a client would not have the will to spend, so that is why I was surprised when I heard that comment of not worth getting payed - also in long run it seems better for the client if I use a wordpress as it has been fully tested and would not brake after we launch it, where as if I created the CMS my self iI'm 100% sure it would have a lot of security issues and so on.
  15. thanks that is very useful, as when I searched on google the same question, I got different results, some saying "I can't believe someone would get payed just for setting up wordpress" - so I was confuced. And as this is the first project I really wanted to ask what people do in these situations so thanks, I guest Im going to use wordpress
  16. Hi, I am required to create a website for a start up company where they just want to tell the world about them and what they can offer. the website could be made up of 10-15 page (almost like a portfolio, without the work samples). I think that I should be using a content management system as it would make it easier for the client to edit the site (eventhough I believe that there wouldn't be any BIG changes) I been using wordpress, to creat blogs and portfolio, and experimented with drupal a little bit, though I feel that these are not ment to be used for a site which could remain statick for ever, so I would realy like to hear your oppinion on wherether I should use an CMS for this website and if there is a special CMS for this these sites which might not even need editing, or if I should be making my own CMS (even though all other posts recoment to not "re-invent the wheel") thanks a lot
  17. thanks a lot thats really helpful and easier to understand than some other solutions at the php manual
  18. I know that this is a slightly old topic and maybe i should not add this but just wanted to share by experience with using oscommerce so far I am using sts templates to help me re-arange the looks and is all going perfect, very easy to get used to it, and the add-on are fantastic, I'm now nearly ready to start intergrading this with paypal (and am not confident on this part) as it is completely new and I cant seem to find any tutorials (not good ones anyway) of course, this is my first e-commerce library, so i cant say if it's the best, but its doing the job for now the only thing that i dont like is the fact that it uses tables for the layout, therefore, i had to mess around with the code where i spend hourse trying to remove the take structure (on the bits i needed slightly more freedom) I would like to ask one final question on this topic if i may: (if i were to use paypal gateway) there are 2 options in paypal, the one where you redirect the users to the paypal site, for the compleation of the order form, or the one where you keep the users in your website and let paypal work behind the scenes? which would be better from the audience point of view as I read that when the users see the paypal logo, they would trust you (the shop) more. so in that case, re-directing the user to paypal site, would be better, but is this not the case? thanks
  19. hi I am wondering if there is way of checking if a query string exists (without any other string) for example: http://site.com?value=string&value2=string i can check if the string exits: if($_GET[value] == true && $_GET[value2] == false){ //perfect } however, there are a lot of combinations where "value" strings apears. so is there a way of checking if ONLY one string exists? hope you can help thanks
  20. I just installed osCommerce, am I writing in thinking that this is just like content management system, and the payment gateways is something else completely, so basically the osCommerce helps me with the structure. Like I would create my own blog but why should I when there are things like wordpress (as example) and I would need to create the connection between this and the payment gateway (e.g. paypal) as a another task also, the client at the moment does not have a hosting account or a gateway arrangements, can I develop this on my domain and transfer it to the clients domain when he is ready. And is it ok that the gateway payment account is not setup yet and typically, considering that I’m new at this, and I will not be getting any physical help in development, do you believe that this one month deadline, is a reasonable time scale for me to accomplish this (or at least be as close to finish as maybe ask the client for few more days, as of course he is not going to be happy with a 3 month delay), or is it an impossible thing to complete within the time scale (or close to) really appreciate the help
  21. right im going to start to test most of the solutions metioned here i will defenately post the solution that i have chosen I hope I find something that would not take me long to get my head around thanks
  22. falkencreative: i read your comment after I posted mine I am so new at this as I have not hear of Magento, but i will look at FoxyCart and see how it goes If I end up using a premade service, would I need to explain this to the client, in that would it be "profesional", or would such info be errelavent for the client as he may get confused thank
  23. I was thinking of creating the website all from the start withought using any open source, is that i good or a bad idea. as again i can just re produce a website using the code that I have from my domy projects. Also if I used an opensource, is there any legal issues or aknolagments I would need to inform the client on. as this is almost like a work experience scheme, where im getting the minimum rate, I think I have to forget about the money for the moment and figure out how to satisfy his needs as as I said this is my very first project on web development, and the client in question, is not within the web sector, therefore, i am sure from what he said, he does not know how much work I would need to do (though i'm working from home, so i guess/hope that one month is going to be enough) I'm sure I'm right in believing that being the first project, it is crutial for me to create a good website, I really need the experience. when ever I'm not sure about something, i tend to just keep write... though thanks for the help
  24. hi Today i have started my first "real world" project, where the client was asked me if I could develope an e-commerce website where he will sell few items. Previously, I have created few e-commerce (dommy) websites, where I have managed to develope the sites to the transaction point. However, I never created the real transaction process. I am aware that there are third party Merchants like the paypal, but again, I never looked at this in more detail before. the client has given me a period of one month. My question is, assuming, that i have never created this before would i be able to accomplish this goal within one month, and do you have any advice on how I should go about achieving this. I also heard that there are opensource carts that I can use, but again I have not looked into them in detail. I am only "worried" if this task is not ment to be undertaken by people that never done this before. is there any recomendations that you could give me into how to achieve this task within the one month deadline thanks a lot for you help
