thanks Iwsimon, you clarified to me that I had the right idea but the "wrong" code . I thought I had left out a ";" or something else ... more learning to do Would this problem have showed up if I used a debugger ? Thanks again

I am wondering which is better for search optimisation: 1. Pages with a lot of the PHP "Include" commmand to provide the menus & the content or 2. Full HTML pages without any PHP Option 1. is preferred but i'm wondering if the search engines will "see" all the "files" that contain the content.
