  1. Hi Stephen if you go to "Profile" then far left on the header if the circle with your initial with an image icon that opens a pop-up to let you add an image/photo though you might  need to crop it to fit.

  2. That's true re the constant practice, and I like the monastic analogy. The master level of knowledge may be a stretch, or may not, but reaching a level of competence that gives confidence enough to make a living from these skills would be an achievement in itself.

I need to pay less attention to external uncertainties too such as Covid, Brexit, and in Scotland the threat of a hostile UK government. This isn't really the place for politics so i'll stop there. One thing I'd like is to get to the end of 2021 and think, well that was a bit too beige.

  3. Hi Drew thanks for your help, I wasn't aware of diffchecker it'll be useful when I get to the CRUD basics again, and all sorts of other places too I'm sure. I've gone back to year zero course wise, to Beginners HTML and intend to repeat it all. I wasn't racing at top speed but I think there was an element of wanting to get through things rather than actually properly studying. Too busy thinking about arriving to appreciate the journey.

Working in corporate travel I've been expecting the flush go anytime this year, which it did this month. A focus on escape was never the best mindset for exploring something new and the course content's something I can enjoy with the right approach. I guess 2021 will be a personal "Great Reset" in more ways than one.

The last unit I was doing before restarting was the Wordpress theme one, but with no history of using any image manipulation programs/apps it was tough going learning Gimp before I could get fully stuck into it. I've had a much underused Wordpress site of my own for several years so Wordpress seems a natural direction (the Basic Wordpress unit felt weird being on the same geek level as the tutor).

So being honest the frustration has more than one root.

Thanks Drew for the time you took as much as the advice itself, it's appreciated.

    Jim.

  4. How can this be corrected then? I've started everything from the very beginning again right back at HTML because the resolve evaporated along with the daily routine and whilst I hadn't given up I'd stopped. And continued being stopped. So when I hopefully pass this way again in a bit how is this problem to be solved, if it can be on my end?

Also while I'm grateful for the response, it's almost 2 months between question and response (not answer but response). I like your courses even if some videos are a decade old, the structure and the thought that went into them initially was well done.

The forums however let things down badly. Taking a few days to answer is one thing, though if it's a critical question it can hold up/disrupt someone's entire study regime, but this length of time is poor. This is a crucial issue you need to address with some urgency Stef because I know it's not only me that's frustrated by this element of things.

  5. It's good you asked as there had been something I couldn't quite put my finger on. I like the overall style and the footer is fine, but after a bright clear start with "Hi there, I'm Ryan Van Dyke" it's black all the way to the footer.

It's too much darkness. I think keeping an eye on the times we live in is a good idea, and there's a lot of darkness and uncertainty in the air right now, and a lighter tone without being in your face might help to lift the mood. And you've almost got that. Context is important.

I remember the old wild west days of the internet when black websites were in vogue and in hindsight they didn't really work, their message was lost in the gloom and they were unpleasant to read. Perhaps after "About me" in black you can alternate back to the colour scheme you use in the "Hi there..." introduction page for "Services" and "Projects".

"About me" in black works well enough because you do want to highlight yourself to sell yourself, but "Services" and "Projects" feel a bit lost in the black. I'd switch back to the lighter introduction colour scheme to make what you're offering stand out more, oddly having the continuous black feels like you're only whispering about them. Not that you want to be shouting at people either.

So after "About me" move to the light coloured background until the footer but keep your subject boxes in "Services" dark and maybe fill in the "Project" boxes and have a lighter shade of what you want the mouseover to reveal to avoid the anonymous empty boxes.

    Hope it helps,

    Jim.

Edit: On reflection why not be kind to yourself and make the projects one row of 3 instead of 2 rows of 3, you won't feel under so much pressure to fill them all in and you can add more as they come.

  6. I wouldn't change anything, you're well on the way, just set it up to link to your email the way you want it to. What I wouldn't do is put "email me." "Me" is such an overused word, it makes me think of a youtuber desperate for subscriptions, but maybe that's just me. "Get in touch" is open and friendly and works well enough, stick with it. And your email and phone number is good and prominent in the footer too.

Edit: I forgot to say watch your spelling/typing, it's probably a typo but in the projects section writing only has one "t", first impression and all that.

  7. I like it. It's clean and sharp and the nav bar is ever present, which isn't always the case.

Is the contact button unfinished? If not maybe reconsider the pop up asking how you'd like to open this. Personally how easily accessible a website makes it to contact them can be a deal breaker for me. If you go with a contact form to fill in with enquiries/comments I'd also leave your contact email easily visible too. Again it's a personal preference but I prefer to copy an email address and send from my own email account as forms usually leave no trace of when a message was sent leaving you to guess how you worded things and what you asked.

For me the sentence: "I am fundamentally tech agnostic--I do not believe in a "superior tech" or coding language, but will pair each project to it's optimal framework." is the best part of the whole website. Right away you're making it clear that you're open minded to using what ever is required to do the best job possible for the client. And if I was a client who had never used a developer before it would make me feel a little bit more at ease that I wasn't going to be over whelmed in jargon (with this in mind I might rethink "optimal framework" for something less opaque) and that my opinions might be listened to.

    Hope this helps.

    Jim.

  8. Not the first and I'm sure not the last time I'll be reminded of that and I'm grateful for all these reminders, they help to maintain some perspective.

I'm beginning to think that bloody minded stubbornness might be the most important character trait for anyone trying to get into this field.

  9. Hi fra168nk,

Thanks, it did indeed help. I've been over that line 27 numerous times but you're asking that question made me look at it differently.

It was a typo alright, though not in the sublime text doc, it was in the column name in phpmyadmin. I had it headed "second name"! I never thought to look at that. That'll be another part of the mental map of how things work hammered into place.

This has caused no end of doubt and anguish so thanks again 😀

  10. Is it just me?

Or does anyone else find their eyeballs being tied in knots as the narrator on the video causes brackets to tumble down the page like a chain of ants on a trapeze?

And how long does it take for your eyes and brain to adjust and be able to follow what's happening?

  11. Hi I've been typing along with this and in part 2 I'm getting the error below:

Notice: Undefined property: stdClass::$lastname in C:\MAMP\htdocs\CRUD-my-php\view.php on line 27

This repeats 5 times on the page once for each row. The table displays as it should below these 5 errors except for the "lastname" column which is blank except for the heading. As I copied and pasted the code for the "id" row as suggested in the video I'm at a loss as to where the error is?

    image.png.383ea9d98a93b370a37962190019b65f.png

The code for this section is below as I've typed it:

    image.png.02f365721b986d31c5e6df2c07ea289e.png

It dosesn't look any less baffling in big letters.  I'm working with Windows 10 in Sublime text 3.

That's it for I'm done for today, time for a cuppa and to descend upon this packet of ginger nuts like Atilla and the boys on a day trip to Rome.

  12. Damn! That's nippy, I hate when they do that.

I'd hazard a guess you probably know the song, but for anyone who doesn't and is curious and has the same problem. search for Goodbye Ruby Tuesday by Melanie in your local Youtube.

PS. Is there anyway in Youtube to tell if a video has regional restrictions outside the one you're viewing it in?

  13. Hi sorry for the delay in coming back to you I had to take a few days away from all this, the learning curve has been steep shall we say, but time to get back to it.

I would have put:  <link href="insert name of css stylesheet file" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

Don't forget to periodically view in browser to check things are working as you go along.

I'm glad you popped this up it reminds me I need to go back and redo the css to refresh things.

    Cheers, Jim.

  14. If you look to the bottom right hand corner of your Sublime Text window you'll see the tabs doc type labelled as HTML, unless you've previously modified it.

Assuming you haven't if you click on where it says HTML you'll see a pop-up that lets you select the language for the page you're working in and you just scroll to find CSS and select it,. Then save the page in the relevant folder and give it an appropriate title. Using stylesheet.css keeps it simple. I'm still pretty new myself but the pieces do start to fit together after a while.

    Hope this helps.

  15. Too true Stef, and thanks for the reassurance. Before I started I was prepared to struggle but it doesn't help it hurt less when you're stuck thinking you've tried every permutation several times over and it starts to get dark and claustrophobic. I wouldn't have had the free time for this opportunity to try get through the course in such a short time without the covid-lockdown-furlough situation but that's still been the hardest stressor to cope with.

I've taken a week off a couple of times since I began in April but I'm still here, having a stubborn streak sometimes is a virtue. I knew when I began exploring coding in Jan/Feb with a view to escaping Mordor that at the age of 57 it was going to be bloody hard at times. Now I'm halfway into "PHP and MySQL" and then it's "Form Validation with PHP and Javascript" and It's done, in the formal learning sense for this course. The project half of things I'm looking forward too but I know it'll have it's own challenges and frustrations.

The basic crux of what you say about studying little and often is all too true.
