  1. I have been trying to download a site into DW CS3 but it keeps saying remote host cannot be found. I am using the right ftp address, user name and password. I have tried checking and unchecking the boxes in Remote Info of Site Definition to no avail. I used Cuteftp to connect and download the site and have imported it into DW but, obviously, need to connect via DW to make any changes. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong please?
  2. Hi lm, thanks for the reply - don't wish to hijack this thread, so I will PM, if that's OK?
  3. I hope nobody minds me asking a question in this thread - but, has anyone had any experience of using the people behind the link given above by roy van (or any others like them) please?
  4. Fair comment. Thanks to your help, the site is virually fully functional now - very grateful. Perhaps I will now find some time to learn CSS and do the job properly!
  5. Know what you mean about the colour scheme and, as I have said in other threads, I fully intend to re-write the site in CSS (with different colour schemes. I just needed to get things live for now. I will remove the underlining from those links that have it. The thing that I can't get is why the same code works on some pages and not (fully) on others.

  7. I have discovered something else (most links now seem OK by the way - be back on that one) :- 1. We now have 3 different enquiry forms on the site. They all open OK but 2 of them don't show the shadow either side of the page, the 3rd does (as do all other pages on the site). Each of these enquiry pages show the shadows in IE. 2. All the navigation links should turn yellow under 'hover' 4 out of 14 don't, yet the links work fine. Suggested fixes will be most welcome. cheers
  8. Hi Thelma, thanks for the response. I have discovered that most of the links still referred to the 'new_work' folder where I have been doing all the changes. I had nearly finished correcting all the errors/links, so have finished that job and put the corrected files (most of them!) to the server. Having checked it direct to the site address in Firefox and IE, it's mostly OK but still a couple of links aren't working. This is puzzling me because they look fine in Dreamweaver and aren't showing as broken in the checker?? Clearly, I should try to rectify these before 'publishing' - which I presume I still need to do?
  9. I have tried to replace the 'old site' with the 'new' and a lot of the links aren't working. When clicking on a lot of the links, it says page can't be displayed. The way I did the transfer was (I think) as advised:- 'New_Work' folder was on the server and all working fine. I created a folder on the server called 'Old Site' and put all of the existing site files in that, by highlighting, dragging/dropping. I then highlighted/dragged/dropped all the files from 'New_work' to the Root Folder. Then I tested the site and found that it wasn't looking like the latest version, so I pressed the Synchronise button in Dreamweaver. The pages now appear in their latest 'livery' and I can access them in IE by typing their address but can't access a lot of them through the page links. What have I done wrong?
  10. Sounds as though I will just have to publish the 'new work' as it is then, warts an' all. Hope I can find time to learn the CSS route before too long. Hey ho.
  11. LSW - because the only teaching I've had (a course of evening classes a year ago), was using tables, with no real reference to code - so not a very good course. Apart from that I've just learned a bit by trying. At present, what I know about CSS could be written on a pin head and I need to get stuff live quite quickly, for business reasons. I fully intent to have a go at switching it all over to CSS as soon as I can find time. I just hoped I could fix this one page and use it as a 'template' to get things active for now. I'm in the UK btw, so safe from a beating eh?
  12. Thanks virtual - I have tried adjusting the codes but it still appears the same when viewed in IE7. amended page/code in www.shirefinancial.co.uk/new_work/new-page2.html Where am I going wrong?
  13. That said - can anyone suggest how I can resolve these issues please?
  14. I know - don't beat me up! I am going to get my head around CSS and switch it all over, but time is short just now and I need to get some new stuff live on the site pretty soon.
  15. Thanks for the replies, probably best to give you a link to the page that I'm using as a 'template' :- www.shirefinancial.co.uk/new_work/new-page1.html
  16. I am working on some appearance/content improvements to our existing site, whilst I convert it to CSS later (when I've learned how!) In the meantime I want to upload some changes to the existing site but have discovered a fundamental problem:- There is a disparity between widths of the header and the page body, even though Dreamweaver says they are both 750px wide. I can see a figure of 756 in brackets after the 750 and don't know what this means? As this affects almost every page on the site (as I'm using one page like a template for all others), I really must fix it. I know I should have noticed this before but, in my defence, the page and background (margins) are the same colour, so it isn't immediately apparent. What has highlighted it is the attempt to put a side shadow down the pages. I would really appreciate some help here please.
  17. Sorry - another question: before I get into adding a lot of content, I want to finish the appearance and I feel it would look better if the page Body had a graded shadow down each side. I have read so many threads and articles on this but just cannot find the way to do it. Can someone advise please?
  18. jlhaslip - many thanks for that, will do some reading then experiment, cheers.
  19. Sorry - I meant samples of POST method - doh!
  20. Thanks - I sort of follow what you're saying, Can you suggest where I might see samples of the Request-type code please?

  22. We are trying to put the finishing touches to a second Enquiry Form for one of our sites. I have asked questions about this site (different topic) previously and have been advised that the 'updating' we are doing would be better served by switching from a 'nested tables' design to CSS - no argument with that but time is a problem. We need to get the site 'live' in it's updated form as soon as possible, so the conversion to CSS will have to follow in a little while. After that long-winded intro - my question(s):- Some of the input boxes (excuse incorrect terminology please) need to be mandatory to allow submission and this is causing some head scratching. One such section of the form is where we want to ask the 'enquirer' to insert either a Home, Work or Mobile number. However, the code the person helping us has used, will only accept all numbers inserted. Is there a way to instruct the form to accept any 1 of the 3 possible inputs? There are other issues but I don't want to 'push my luck'! Any help will be much appreciated.
  23. Thanks again lm. I have followed that and got it looking just right in Firefox but it wass slightly too far right in IE7, so had to take it back a bit. It now looks about right in both - cheers.
