I found this article today with a good list of alternate open source software for those that can't afford the commerical software. It's a good list but not entirely the most accurate. Just read the comments at the end. OpenSouce Alternatives ---------------------------------------- Success is based on how much you spend. If it's not money, then the alternative is your time. The article isn't the most accurate, at least in the area of web programs. I've tried all the web authoring tools listed, and they seem to just pair them up randomly. Nvu sucks for serious developers. Its about on par with FrontPage 98, IMO. Quanta Plus is good, but it has all kinds of features that are more for teams of developers. I work alone, so those go to waste on me. SeaMonkey is Netscape Composer remixed. Bluefish is my editor of choice. It is lightweight, fast, and has all the shortcuts a coder needs. It is designed to help a programmer, not as a tool to help a designer program. Also, Inkscape is very good, but it is hardly a replacement for Illustrator. It is great for much web design, and awesome for logos, but it is limited. Finally, I'd like to point out the Open Source is not just about not being able to afford software. K3b is better than Nero, IMO. As an OS, Linux is leaps and bounds ahead of Windows for web development. Graphics design is lacking a bit, but you can run Photoshop in Linux just fine if you try (I run CS2 via WINE). Open Source software is more about community involvment, and creating a product that caters to your audience. Linux doesn't need to make profit numbers! ---------------------------------------- Simple is better. |

Nvu sucks for serious developers. I agree. Nvu is terrible. It does some seriously irritating things. If there's an error in your code, instead of just showing the messed up resulting page, it will freak out and just give you a blank page. I had this keep happening to me during a class I was taking, where we were encouraged to use Nvu. The instructor had no idea why it was happening and never tried to figure it out. I quit using it immediately and would never, ever try it again. I HATE it. As for Open Office...when I got my new laptop, I decided to just use OO for awhile. It's pretty good but I just recently installed my old copy of Word 2000 because there were just some things I couldn't figure out how to do in OO or, if I did, it would have taken me waaaay too much time. I tried Gimp as well a while back but I don't like it as well as PhotoFiltre. Just didn't seem as intuitive. |

SeaMonkey is Mozilla Suite. With the release of Firefox they did away with Mozilla Suite which is actually Netscape originally. So they decided to get away from a combined product wit editor, email, browser etc and developed Firefox and Firebird, sunbird etc. But Mozilla had a fan base and they talked Mozilla into letting them freely update it and Mozilla agreed so these fans now further develop "SeaMonkey." ---------------------------------------- Gu.aal kwsh yak'i itakw ijeet wugoodk LSW-WebDesign.com |
