creating a new password for MySQL

I just installed WAMP for the 3rd time. This time, I followed the tutorial to the letter. However, when I try to set up a PHP database, MySql asks for a username and password.

I wasn't prompted to set one up in the installation.

Do I need to set up a new user name and password? Is there some way of finding out what the default name and password is?

I could really use some advice, please.

Sophia confused

Re: creating a new password for MySQL

When you set up WAMP/MySQL it will leave the password to blank and the user name 'root'.

Details:

First find where you installed wamp on your machine. For me it is on:

C:\wamp\

Once you find your wamp installation, you want to go here:

C:\wamp\mysql\bin

Now start up your Windows command prompt and navigate to that location. You can do this by typing:

cd wamp\mysql\bin

Once you are in that directory (with command prompt) you can connect to mysql with this command:

mysql -u root

... that will log you in. If you log in you will get this message:

Welcome to MySQL monitor ....

Re: creating a new password for MySQL

I tried putting 'root' for the username and leaving the password blank, but it requires a password and won't proceed without it.

What are you doing exactly, when you said:

'when I try to set up a PHP database'

... are you using MySQL monitor?

Make sure you have wamp running BTW.

PS: remember, wamp is used for testing, when you go live you will need to set up the servers mysql.

Re: creating a new password for MySQL

I purchased software for a shopping cart. It's called WebAssist eCart. It comes with a complete "store" (databases, DW pages, templates connections, etc.)

The instructions led me to setting up the PHP database. The screen is MySQL Settings and it reads,

"Please complete all the fields in this form.
Address:
Username:
Password:
Database Name:"

The address is 'localhost"
The database is 'BlueSky Data'

They suggest 'root' for the username.

But I don't have a password.

It won't let me leave it blank - it returns to the Settings dialogue box with the instruction to fill out ALL FIELDS.

Re: creating a new password for MySQL

You will need to set a user name for the user:

'root'

How to do it:

1. Log into mysql monitor - I gave details above. Or you can simple use the Wamp menu (in the icon tray in the Windows start bar) and
select: MySQL -> MySQL console.

With WAMP, just hit enter and you will be logged in:

Welcome to the MySQL monitor.

Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer.

-

Use this command to reset the root password:

mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR root@localhost=PASSWORD('your_password');
