Are there any tried and true ways (free or very inexpensive) to get traffic to your site? I've done 'free web site submits' but wonder if that really helps any. ![]() |

I do not think they help, search engines will find you even if you never submit and will visit if you never submit again. See Bruce Clay, they all trade URLs with eachother. ---------------------------------------- Gu.aal kwsh yak'i itakw ijeet wugoodk LSW-WebDesign.com |

Best way to get pure traffic is by making sure your pages are built so search engines can read them. You should also be updating content regularly. Having clear original content will help as well. If you're using scripts like blogs/cms you should review the code to make sure it is syntactically correct and yields not only valid but search friendly code. Finally, you can look for directories within your site's context. For example: if I do a real estate site and part of the job is to get the site traffic (i charge more for that) I will go and find some directories dedicated to real estate and post (a lot of times freely) my link to their directory. You can also pay for inclusion into those directories but you should have a clear idea as to what you're spending on that and what you're charging |

You can actually do a lot of things on your own to generate traffic. Like posting to forums, submitting articles, making reciprocal links, article trading, researching keywords, running contextual campaigns, submitting and promoting videos, analyzing competitors and their websites, tracking statistics, to name a few. These tasks take time. These are routine and mundane. |

Also, if you're creating new content regularly, don't underestimate the power of social bookmarking. Taking a few minutes each day to submit to Digg and StumbleUpon, for example, normally creates a fair bit of extra traffic for me. God forbid I hit the front page on Digg though; I only get 25 GB of bandwidth a month! Also, if you write a blog, leaving comments on other blogs with your web site address will help your traffic too. The best part of these suggestions is the cost: free! ---------------------------------------- John McCollum http://johnmccollum.co.uk ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by monkeysaurus at Nov 12, 2007 5:45:13 AM] |

I have been reading a very sensible article on gaining the attention of search engines for newly released sites. Actually, I've been doing a little bit more reading lately. Anyway, you probably already know about keywords, but did you know that simply creating simple two or three word phrases can dramatically reduce the number of search engine results and therefore will help more in the likelihood of being found more easily. The way it goes is that you should choose between 10 - 15 of these keyword phrases for each page, have a link to another listed site for a search engine to follow and start indexing your site, and update each of your pages to reflect the different keywords that best describe what each page is about. The most important thing is to keep some consistency and relevancy in the content of each page. That is, the links, images, and anything else that relates to the very nature and relevancy concerning each pages content and keywords. Mind you though, I had an idea a while back ago that it might not be a bad idea to give away free t-shirts at targeted groups of, say, a particular business when trying to promote that businesses awareness. Or is that being just too desperate. ---------------------------------------- We Brits do things differently, but we still get shot at! |

I've referred a lot of people to the site over the last 9 months but I've gotten about 1,700 hits to my page which includes my portfolio link and met some great people as well: [Deleted as spam] ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by LSW at Nov 29, 2007 12:33:50 PM] |

If you need quick results then go for PPC (Pay Per Click) .Normally organic optimization is best but takes time ,so in the meanwhile for a new website it is advisable to go for PPC. |

Great, you pay for every click through... even if no sales are made. Hardly worth it if it does not translate into sales, it just syphons off money and they make a killing. ---------------------------------------- Gu.aal kwsh yak'i itakw ijeet wugoodk LSW-WebDesign.com |
