I think you make some really excellent points in the article. It is really hard sometimes convincing a client that what they are asking for is a bad idea and even if you go through with the bad idea, at most you can only implement it badly. I always tend to recommend placing a 70% quality image or maybe at the most 60% grade and have them post a statement say for hi-res version click to buy. I did have one instance that could have been a good argument to have a feature like this, but I was able to accomplish it in another manner. It was for some style guides for a marketing company's clients. They had several freelance or out of office workers and designers that they wanted to give easy access to the styleguides, but at the same time they needed a way to prevent them from downloading them(pdfs/images) because they wanted to ensure that the workers had the latest revisions of the styleguide. They first leaned towards the whole blocking write click thing, then there was progression through the logical thought that i had to walk them through pointing out that yea, you blocked the right click, but they can still do XYZ, which i found a interesting way for stopping printing(why someone would want to, eh). Finally what i did was to create a pdf that they could download that would check back with the server for new revisions, if there were some it would inform the worker with a simple popup message. All in all I think it went about it in a better manner than blocking clicks. The thing I think im trying to get at is that there are more ways to solve a problem that are better and more specific to the needs than just a general blocking of a right click. So sit down and talk out the process and determine where the fear is coming from and address it with some sort of security, watermarks are great for those who dont want to see their works elsewhere(although a good ps person can get around it also). The thing is we are moving into a period where information, ideas, and technology are going to be developed in a more and more open collaborative manner and we need to embrace it, get good positioning and move forward because those who try to stop a tidal wave just get washed away and forgotten. http://www.chrismcintoshdesigns.com ~ Chris McIntosh ~ 'Understand it, I dont even understand the people who understand it.' - Queen Elizabeth |

There's also an extension available for your right click menu called, "... Save Background Image As" to save images behind clear.gifs. haha! ![]() You could get away with to actual images on the page and then just using positioning and z-index to place the clear on top of the one your trying to hide. All of this is for newbies though and those who are actively stealing this stuff already know how to get around all of it. |
