IE7 - The time is near

Ok folks - here is the latest deal.

IE7 Public Beta 2 preview was released March 20th.

This is the newest and for us final version according to Eric Meyer . There may be more versions fixing bugs etc. in the security, but as far as rendering web sites which is our area, this is final. What IE7 shows us now is what we will see in the IE7 final release.

This is a Beta, it can cause problems, however my contacts who have used it over IE6 have seen no major problems, so you must choose if you will risk it. I intend to install it now over IE6 on my macine as I trust these people and want the three months to check my sites and fix them before the final release. Again according to Eric Meyer it should be released te second half of 2006, so say about 3 months from now.

For a change we have a heads up period to get our web sites tested and fixed if needed.

[NOTE: It will double check if you ave a legal version of XP and it requires Win XP SP2]

Re: IE7 - The time is near

Well I just installed, works fine. Did have trouble with a IE plugin, but the window that tells you this has a button in the lower left corner called "advanced", use this to call up a window listing all plugins where you can then disable the problem and re-start.

Both LSW and DSD show fine in IE7 (being generally hack free), I did notice LSW has a couple pixel slide on to elements but that is very minor indeed.

Standards compliance Vs. hacks - Standards compliance wins this round with no need for Conditional comments which I had not yet used.

Also worth noting tat I usually use IE clones to work. Now tat I upgraded to IE7 they are still accessing the rnedering engine so they show me things the way IE7 does.

Of course you will still need to test websites in IE6 - can you run both IE6 and 7 on one computer?

Re: IE7 - The time is near

I'm leaving my wife's PC with Win 2K and IE 6 for local testing. She doesn't use her PC enough to warrant an upgrade in software.

I installed the last beta version and it was a mistake. It was real buggy and I noticed very little difference between it and IE6.

I don't know, I'm real comfy with IE6 - not sure if I want to use the new interface of IE7. Although my default browser is FF. I can't live without the great extensions.

IE does have a web dev toolbar but it lacks flexibility (big suprise) and functionality compared to the Web Dev's Toolbar and the fact that I can drag and drop icons from my other FF extensions to complement its features.

>> Any comments on the speed of IE7 compared to IE6? My IE6 is fast er than FF (maybe the extensions?) even when tweaked for better performance.

Re: IE7 - The time is near

Having just the one computer, I am reluctant to tamper with my Windows setup. I really must install IE7 if I am to design websites.

I now know that my copy of Win XP is legal, phew! smile Next step Service Pack 2. I have two questions:

Has anyone here had problems installing SP2? Any advice?

And How long does it take to install SP2? I want to know how long will my PC will be out of action. I was surprised how long SP1 took - a good couple of hours I think!

Re: IE7 - The time is near

I mean once it has downloaded, how long does it take to install?

Re: IE7 - The time is near

@tim-It's a big download but I have no problems with it.

There is no good way to tell how long the install will take to complete b/c it depends on the state of your current OS.

I had sp2 downloaded and installed in less than 30 minutes on newer (less cluttered) pc's. But, last week it took almost 3 hours on a client's laptop (with dsl download)!

If your pc is defrag'd and clean, has any sp1 patches, etc., you'll be all set.

To make it faster, disable the Win XP Write file protection. Otherwise, it will verify each file's integrity before and after it is changed by an update which really slows things down. (it usually necessary in cases whre the integrity of the OX is a st question though.)

When I recently upgraded my PC's hardware, I used a shortcut of sorts to install my XP.

Go to http://www.nliteos.com/index.html and find out how you can create your own customized xp install with sp1 and 2 preinstalled. You'll need your original XP disk and Keycode of course.

Basically, it will take your xp install cd and save it to your hard drive. From there you can disable some of the pesky default settings and add-ons and enable other things that are not normally active that you might want.

Also I was able to integrate many of the small applications that I use daily, as well as my new mainboard's drivers, into the installation.

It's free and well supported and it will turn any install as a turnkey operation - knock on wood. :)

SWEET!!!!

Enjoy!
