Re: Creating Favicons

Meet - Does it work in FireFox? I think LSW's right in saying that in IE, it needs to be online to work, but it will work in Firefox when viewed locally.

Re: Creating Favicons

IE handles favicons differently (and much worse) than firefox and the other browsers. I may be wrong, but I believe it will look for it each time you "go online."

So, if you have IE configured to look for new versions of stored pages with each visit (under temp files settings), which is not default, or ask IE to clear your temp folder with every close, you may lose favicons until you return to the website again.

Re: Creating Favicons

Hi - realise this is quite an old topic by now, but I've noticed that adding icons in the 'usual' way doesn't seem to display them on the Mac - any tips regarding this?

Re: Creating Favicons

no, no idea, don't use one.

If a thrread is sticky it is important enough to keep from getting lost, this is informational and a sticky so no problem posting to it. I think admin uses a Mac.

Re: Creating Favicons

tpattison said Place this in the head of every document in the site:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"/>

I would suggest that the image favicon.ico is also put in the root directory of your host's server as IE seems to take it from there and doesn't need a link in every webpage.

See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537656.aspx
The first method is to save the icon with the default file name of favicon.ico to the root directory of your domain........

However, other browsers seem to need the link in the head section of every page (where you can change the favicon if you want a different one, use a different name like favicon2.ico) so you need the favicon.ico in the root directory and the link in the head of each page. The one in the root directory must be called favicon.ico.

It should be 16*16px as there is no sense in getting browsers to resize it.

Edit;
Amplelon said that it doesn't display on a Mac, perhaps a Mac needs it in the root directory. I haven't got a Mac so I can't check.
