INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME
CATEGORY: BEGINNERS THEORY - APRIL 2005

For some people, registering a domain name is a little bit of a mystery. In this article I will try to answer the common questions and (hopefully) make registering a domain as easy as pie!

WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?

Just like your home address (in the real world) is unique, domain names are simply unique addresses on the Internet. Every domain name has to be unique; otherwise no one would be able to find the website they were looking for!

So when you register a domain name, you are getting yourself a unique address on the web.

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXTENSIONS?

Extensions are the last letters that appear after the period (.) in a domain name.

For example: For the website www.killersites.com, the extension is: .com

There is really no practical difference between extensions, although, some people still value .com extensions over the others, since it was the first type available.

These days, you have a wide choice of extensions when registering a domain name.

Some of the extensions that are now available:

  • .com
  • .net
  • .org
  • .biz
  • .name
  • .info
  • .tv
  • .fam

TIP: when registering a domain name, you will be asked to choose an extension. Fortunately, many domain name registering services will automatically provide alternatives, should you find your first choice is already taken.

DOMAIN NAMES ARE BECOMING HARDER TO GET

There are a limited number of names out there and it is getting harder to get the exact domain name you might be looking for. Long gone are the days when you could get single-word domains like:

 Business.com
 Sale.com
 Pet.com

A LITTLE STORY:
Being among some of the first people on the web, I actually had an opportunity (yet failed to act!) to buy many of these names (for only $50 each) before the web became the crazy place that it now is - many of these names were later sold for millions! Lesson to be learned: strike while the iron is hot!

A FEW TIPS ABOUT REGISTERING AND PICKING A DOMAIN NAME

You will probably have to come up with some combination of words or pseudo words to get a decent domain name ? you will need to be inventive.

For example: Killer + websites became: Killersites.com

Why not: killerwebsites.com?

Killerwebsites.com is pretty good but Killersites.com is shorter and to the point AND that makes it much better.

TOP 4 RULES OF REGISTERING DOMAIN NAMES

  • Keep the domain names short ? people remember short names.
  • Try to use words in your domain name that relates to your websites subject in some way. Ex: Killersites.com ? makes a reference to ?killer? websites.
  • Domain names cannot contain spaces or special characters:

    • This is bad: mywebsite on chickens.com
    • This is bad: m^websitesonflies.com
    • This is good: chickenInfo.com

  • Although it does not affect the search engines, .com domains are still perceived as being more valuable by some.

For example: Killersites.com is worth more than Killersites.org

A FINAL NOTE: Domain names are not case sensitive:

Example: Killersites.com = killerSites.com

Comments anyone?

Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

A good idea Broc.

I think that mentioning country specific extensions would also be a good addition: .us, .ca, co.uk et cetera.

I will put together another piece on that.

confused Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

One thing that has always bugged me is who owns the domain names in the first place? It's like those silly deals where you can buy an area of the moon - who owns the moon? Who owns the web to be able to sell domain names?

Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

A recognized central body controls domain names and as long as you keep your registration up to date, it's your domain name.

It works in the same way the ownership of your house is determined by a record in city hall.

Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

Well, I think it's kind of obvious. They're God's domain names. Same as it's God's dirt. You just borrow it and build a house (or a website) on it. wink

Hmm... never though about the similarities between domain registration and real estate.... I was thinking of becoming a reseller. I dunno...

Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

Also special characters are allowed now, for instance we could have bought achterhfen1.net instead of achterhoefen1.net

Also ofcourse you should stick with the correct domain ending, so maybe list what they mean.

.org - Organizations, basically non-profit.

.net - non-profit again, killersites could use a .net as it is for helping others.

.com - Commercial

.info - informationon a subject, company, not really commercial.

.tv - Multimedia, for webdites made with Flash for instance, or lots of Video.

.name - for private persons, two part, kyle.lamson.name

Then those planned, here are a few:

.xxx - for adult web sites

.areo - reserved for airports

.church - reserved for churches

Might just want to mention that peple should really choose the right catagory.

Alsomany courts have given name rights to VIPs and large companies.
You may be named Joe Ferrari, but Farrari has the right to all names and can force you to change it.
Same for people, for instance a German named Gehard Schrder lost in court to using his name as a web site as it is also the name of the German Chancellor.

Re: INTRODUCTION TO REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME

Hi guys

It might also be worth mentioning the importance of domain names on search engine rankings.

It seems that search engines are looking for key phrases within a domain name. It would make sense that if your site is called
buy-widgets.com there is a fair chance that your site sells widgets, so search engines would give you a ranking boost accordingly.

Anyone interested in purchasing widgets is also likely to remember a web address containing the name of the product they are interested in.
