Server Space

Hi all,

I am quickly running out of space on my webhosting package. I know I can buy more but a friend has said that he has a lot of free space on his package that is with a different host.

Is there an easy way I can use his space on my website?

Thanks,

Pocklove

Re: Server Space

That depends.... He would have to give you access to his server for one, then the question is if he can host more than one domain on his, or else, your site would be www.hisdomainname.com/yourstuff

Or you could keep your current server, and put extra pages/images on his space, but the urls show, so that might look a bit odd.

Re: Server Space

Thanks Thelma.

He can host more than one domain.

The main problem is the images take up loads of room.

I guess one solution might be to create a new domain eg www.mysite2.com and have it hosted on his package.

So where the current link to the photo's page is
www.mysite.com/photos, it could become www.mysite2.com/photos

Would that work? It would hopefully seem pretty seemless to the users too.

Re: Server Space

If his hosting service is like mine then he can have an "add-on" domain and it can have a separate username and password, so it would be separate from his own domain and each of you would have security.

If you want to link somepages on www.mysite.com/ hosted by your service with other photos or pages on www.mysite2.com/ hosted by his service then pages or images would need external urls and go out round the internet which might cause some delays; but if you put all of it on his host under www.mysite2.com/ then I can't see a problem.

Code downloaded to my PC will be deleted in due course.
WIN XP SP3; IE7, Firefox 3.0, Opera and Safari for Windows; screen resolution usually 1024x768.
IE6 on W98 with 800*600.

yes! If it is just images, files, and documents, move them to your friend's server and then link to them using an absolute URL. for example,

<img src="http://www.Your-Friends-Server.com/Your-Stuff/image-name.jpg alt="" width="" height="" />

This is done all the time. Companies sell server space to do this and large websites will use different servers to increase load time and redundancy. Also, try services like image shack, photo bucket, etc., to host your files.

just be sure 'hotlinking' is not prevented for the directory with your stuff.
