Most Action pack news day ever!

Hi,

I am not one to post non-nerd stuff often, but this was such a news packed day that I had to post them here:

US:

Skittish employers slashed 533000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years, catapulting the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent, dramatic proof the country is careening deeper into recession.

-

Canadian employment fell by the most since 1982 in November, led by manufacturing, a sign the world?s eighth-largest economy is falling victim to a global recession.

-

OJ Simpson faces 6 years to life at sentencing .. this for stealing few hundred bucks worth of memorabilia!

.. Meanwhile in Paris:

Armed robbers pulled off one of the world's biggest jewellery heists at a famed Paris store, making off with 80 million euros (102 million dollars) in diamonds and valuables, investigators said Friday.

You see, if you're going to pull off a heist, you shouldn't be a stupid idiot like OJ and try for a few hundred bucks .. you might as well go for 100 million!

The irony about this, is that the Paris robbers (if caught) might do just a couple of years!

-

Finally:

Boy George Convicted For Restraining, Beating Norwegian Male Escort

Good news day!

You might want to add the story about a Walmart worker that died by the shoppers that stampede him to death.

I can see your point on how ridiculous the Walmart thing is, but I just feel so bad for the man.

Re: Most Action pack news day ever!

On the lighter side:
Begich receives phone message from Obama
While in a meeting in Fairbanks Wednesday, Senator-elect Mark Begich received a cell phone call. It said "unknown, which Begich doesn't like, so he pushed it to voice mail, according to a report by KFBX Radio in Fairbanks. When he listened back he heard this message, "Senator-elect. This is Barack Obama. I am really eager to see you sworn in and we're going to have a lot of work to do. This is Barack Obama."

Another woman my wife told me about was called by Obama, but had been fooled my radio shows before so she said basically "yea right" and hung up.

Then Obama staff called her and she did not believe it until a Friend of her's called and said Obama was trying to reach her! Guess a politician.

"He don't get no respect!" laughing

Employers slashing 533000 jobs in November - bad news for sure.

With the US being in a deepening recession and looking to get worse. Just curios - those making a living in web design, how does the recession affect your business. Some businesses are up (McDonalds, Wal-Mart), but most are down - what about established web design?

confused Re: Most Action pack news day ever!

I just had to post this:
UPDATE - Spam Can shut down until afternoon now as testing of white powder continues

The Alaska governor's office is among those in the nation that received letters containing a suspicious powder.

The letter addressed to the governor's office was intercepted yesterday in the third floor mailroom of the Court Plaza Building at 240 Main Street in Juneau.

The letter bore a Texas postmark, just like the other letters mailed to eight other governors this week.

Palin's office said the letter was addressed to Palin's predecessor Gov. Frank Murkowski, who left office two years ago.

Capital City Fire Rescue responded at about 1:18 p.m., according to Division Fire Chief Rich Etheridge, who says workers were initially requested to remain in their work areas.

Hazardous Materials Technicians entered the spill site and contained the product in place, he says.

The building was then evacuated. Fire department personnel decontaminated three of the occupants who were directly exposed to the product on scene, according to Etheridge, who says there were no known injuries.

The Alaska National Guard 103rd Civil Support Team in Anchorage was requested to respond to the incident for product identification and evidence collection.

The team arrived in Juneau by C-130, entered the building and collected samples and evidence.

Etheridge says all evidence in this incident was turned over to the FBI where the unidentified materials will be tested to identify any hazards.

He says results should be available late today.

Seven of the other seven letters contained harmless powder.

They were addressed to governors in Alabama, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana and Rhode Island.

We're informed this morning that a letter containing suspicious powder and addressed to the governor's office has been intercepted in Maine. It also had a Texas postmark.

An update posted at 8:30 this morning says the building will be closed until early this afternoon pending testing in Anchorage.

It was initially expected to reopen at 10 this morning.

More than 120 people work in the building known as the Spam Can.

The Italics are mine... What idiot mails powder to a Governor that has been out of office for 2 years?! It is not like Palin has not been in the news so it could easily slip someone that she is Governor now.... d oh

*Snicker*

Turns out that she is not only not in Juneau... as usual, the capitol is not good enough for her... but she is not even in the state. Yesterday or the day before was the Governor's open house at the mansion... she wasn't even there.

Future terrorist wannabes, please mail our governor in Wasilla and leave the poor employees alone, odds are she is not in state anyways. Note she... Palin... not Murkowski.

I can think of no better job for a government official than taking a long vacation. Now, if we could get Congress to do the same, we'd be in business! I would gladly pay "those people" not to work.
