Opera 9.5 released [Update 1]

The newest Opera is now available, Opera 9.5.

It now includes Dragonfly natively. Dragonfly is a resource tool for developers to debug JavaScript and DOM as well as CSS. It will allow you to step through scripts step by step and spot errors where they actually occurred.

Opera Link syncs your favorites and your speed dial between computers.

Quick find not only remembers URLs and titles but content now as well, so you can find what you remember having seen somewhere.

Opera 9.5 is much faster than 9.2 with a new rendering engine for better standards support. It passes Acid 1. Acid 2 and Acid 3 with 83% compared to IE's 12%. Opera now has better support than it previous great support for standards like (X)HTML, XML, XSLT, CSS 2.1, SVG 1.1 and JavaScript, but it also includes support for many aspects of upcoming standards such as HTML 5 and CSS 3.

Better fraud protection

And the old standards that only opera offers or Opera was the first to offer.

  • Tabbed browsing and sessions
  • speed dial
  • Zoom and fit to width - enlarge images as well as text, and if it is to large for the screen, tell it to fit your resolution.

Then of course other standards like Email and chat, RSS support, skins, widgets, custom searches and content blocking.

[Edit: Great article on what is new, but note it is a long article too and gets into advanced standards support - Opera 9.5 - the next generation of web standards]

Re: Opera 9.5 released

Sounds cool! Which browser won the acid tests? I wonder if Opera 9.5 will finally redraw a sticky footer correctly.

Re: Opera 9.5 released

Technically Opera, it was the first browser to pass.

But now they all pass, more a matter of how much... as mentioned, IE only gets 12% on Acid 3.

Re: Opera 9.5 released

I ran Acid 3...

Opera 9.5 - 83%

Safri 3 - 75%

Firefox - 53%

IE7 - 12%

Try yourselves and see the difference between browsers - http://acid3.acidtests.org/ at http://www.acidtests.org/.

I am disappointed with Firefox.

Anyone running Firefox 3 beta and/or IE8 beta who can test them?

Yarr.

Fx 3 (RC1) scores 71/100 on Acid 3.

I deleted IE8 as it was causing problems with my installation of Multiple IEs.

EDIT - just read a blog post that claims that IE8 beta 1 scores 17/100 on Acid 3! From the little testing I did with IE8, nearly every site that I visited was broken in some way or other - including the biggies, like Digg. It's going to be a mighty s***storm when IE8 fully launches, unless it improves in the later betas... thinking

Re: Opera 9.5 released

From 12% to 17%, it is an improvement.

Course you have to take into thought that it is a Beta too.

Web site now must add the new meta tag for IE to specify what version... standards sites should be OK, but IE7, IE6 IE5 sites will have to be updated or the meta tag added to tell IE8 to use the right rendering engine... not sure in how far the IE8 beta has that working.
