uum. there are a few certifications- apart from going to university and getting a degree but in all honesty if you dont want to take a few years to go to university then i wouldent really bother. Depending oin the sort of design you want to do the only thing that will get you a job is your personality and your portfolio, who cares what degrees youvce got however ofcourse you can always get more money for a job if the company can be certain that you kniw what your talking about... ---------------------------------------- /* noComment */ =D |

I have top disagree. I learned web design in school. I have been doing it for 7 years, 97% of that in Germany where I learned it. I specialize in accessible web design, I have been quoted in magazines, I have written articles, I help manage Killer Sites... and it all means squat! I returned stateside in January and promtly discovered all my experience means nothing without a pig skin. Many resume were sent back in 24 - 48 hours. Recruiter after recruiter said no thinks when discovering I have no degree. A Major Advertising company in Detroit backed off at the last moment because I had no dgree and no "real time in ciommercial web design." I finally got a job for below average pay for a web designer... they could pay more, but I do not have a degree to justify it. Unless you want to do freelance/self employed work... a degree is a must. It is a employers market and they do look for degrees first thing. They will disregard you based on that. They can have anyone they want and what they want is a degree holder. Regardless of how poor most web design classes are. A Minimum is a Associates Degree. But the magority ask for a Bachelors degree. They do say or "equivelant experience," but my 7 years never helped. I would look into ITT, you will see them advertised on TV. They are in like 48 states. They teach what you need to know decided on by people in the field and not some old men in an ivory tower dealing in ideals. Unfortunatly I was forced to drop out just before school started to take this job... I now think it was a mistake, but I needed to supply my family with a home. You will learn more in forums like this than in school. But that degree is important and do not let others say it is not. Just watch the jobs section in the paper or online job places (Monster, Career Builder etc.) and see how many require a degree for yourself. ---------------------------------------- Gu.aal kwsh yak'i itakw ijeet wugoodk LSW-WebDesign.com |

You need a degree or real world experience in a corporate environment. Some of the most successful programmers / web developers I know do not have a degree, but they do have lots of commercial experience. ... One person I know manages multi-million dollar projects and has no degree but he has a great resume having worked on several big projects. What is more important, the degree or the experience? From what I've seen, experience trumps all. If you are good and you have the track record to show it, you will beat out people with a degree. In web design, you need to have great design skills; coding skills is much less important because people hiring don't see or understand the code ... all they see is the design. For example: You can have someone who understands web standards, CSS and XHTML and all the browser issues etc ... but will lose everytime to someone who can make the page LOOK really good ... yet they barely understands basic html. But, if you are a web developer (PHP, ASP etc) and not just a web designer, then you can sell yourself on functionality - code becomes somewhat important then. ... Some web designers who have good knowledge of code, still have a terrible time finding work. This is because their design skills are not there. Being able to design is something you are born with and for many, no matter how hard you study or practice, they just will never be any good at it. For those people I strongly suggest that they learn PHP, this will open up many doors that otherwise would be closed. - The IT sector is much more pragmatic than other fields ... they have to be. Unfortunately, if you've only done personal websites or a couple of websites for small companies, that will not do it if you want to get hired in a corperate environment. ---------------------------------------- Stefan Mischook Video Tutorial Store | Web Templates ---------------------------------------- [Edit 8 times, last edit by admin at Oct 23, 2006 12:00:11 PM] |

To help make my point about how design skills, experience and degrees play into your chances of landing a job, I've slapped together this chart. Let me know what you think. ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- Stefan Mischook Video Tutorial Store | Web Templates ---------------------------------------- [Edit 4 times, last edit by admin at Oct 23, 2006 3:05:49 PM] |

@LSW i think you missed my point, i wasnt suggesting that she dosent go and get a degree i was simply saying that just cos youve got a piece of paper dosent mean that youve you are going to get the best jobs, Just look in any design magaxine and you will soon see that experience does count for a lot. i made a decisions a few years ago that i was leaving all the corporate stuff behind, i found out very quickly that working for biggish comjpanies is not as good as it first seems- ok the moneys better but your cinstantly hastled by everyone to do impossible things. finally , it is a fair point to say that fantastiuc designers dont have to look for work, the work finds them. Ther portfolio meanr 100 times more than a bit of paper saying youve spent 4 years gettin drunk and wastin time !! I mean am i not right in thinking that the founder of apple dropped out of college ---------------------------------------- /* noComment */ =D ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by spatial_fluidity at Oct 24, 2006 8:15:52 AM] |

This is hilarious!!And a very accurate article as well. I run into a lot of CodeMonkeys who think they are GraphicDesigners, and it's very frustrating. What do you suggest for someone who knows a little bit of everything, including Information Architecture, etc., standards, but isn't a fullblown CodeMonkey or DesignTurtle, but who knows writing for the web and standards and a good sense of things? What kind of classes should I take or how should I sell myself??? |
