Topic: Client website was hacked - need advice

One of my client's website was hacked on Friday.  It was a Wordpress site and I do not have a current database backup.  So, it looks like the whole thing needs rebuilt.  I do have the custom theme files on my machine, but all the page content is gone.  I can't believe it.  sad

How do you guys handle this type of situation regarding your fees and payment?  Do you do the work for free?  I highly doubt that, but I really don't know what to do.  I feel bad charging for the rebuild, but I don't want to do it for free, either.  Advice?

Re: Client website was hacked - need advice

Hi Susie. No backup, that's rough. What's the host's position on it? It's really no ones fault, except the hackers. Did you just build it? If so, if it was me, I'd probably split the difference with the client and do it for half price. But I don't know, that's a tough one?

Re: Client website was hacked - need advice

I strongly urge you to contact the host to see if they have a backup.  Most will retain daily backups as far as 7 days back.  Some maybe longer. So if was hacked just a couple of days ago then the chances are that you will be able to get them back up and running in a short time and that's if the host keeps adequate daily backups.

Thanks, Eddie.  I just sent them another email with that request.

Funny, right after I replied to your post, I got an email from one of their techs mentioning that they keep 5 days worth of backups.  Great timing!  Hopefully this will work!!!!
