Topic: slicing images

Hello, I am a newbie in web design but I've been learning Fireworks and have already two websites in process.

The problem I am facing right now is that I am confused about slicing, I've seen many tutorials, some say you should just select a pixel of a background image and set it to repeat x or y, on others I see they select entire areas of the page, I am not sure if I should cover the whole page with slices or just the image and the text areas.

Can anyone please explain in a simple way how this works?

Also, if I have a hot spot on an image and I create a link, do I still have to put a slice over it?

I have attached a screen shot of what I have done with one of the pages.

PS. Can you create a forum for FireWorks users?

Thank you!
