Hey guys, I’m taking care of a website for a company that has locations in two general locations (The Philadelphia/NJ area and the DC/VA/MD area) I would like it so when the user clicks “Sales & Events” they are directed to the sales & events at the location they are closest to (Either the Philly/NJ or the DC,VA,MD area) Is there any way to effectively do this or will I need to create some type of gateway page so they can choose their location? I’m sorry if this is not in the right part of the Forum but if this is possible, I don’t know what type of scripting would be used… Thanks for any and all help!

Good evening K.S.
I know web safe is the best bet - however I am interested in downloading a couple of free fonts from resources at Smashing Mag. When downloading (for instance Fontin Sans) - I extract the winrar file to my desktop. When opened - it has a copy of all the fonts as seen on the page. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

As always - thank you

Javascript menu will not center

Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum, my name is Daniel and I've been a html beginner for ages. I started out over 10 years ago but it's never been my strong side so I never really advanced anywhere :) But I will do what I can to contribute in any way I can!

I have a problem with a site I'm trying to put together. You can clearly see the problem if you look at it here:
http://www.falloutdata.se/Hallafors/

You'll have to excuse the design, it's really only temp pictures and text so far, I haven't got very far with it yet.

As you can see the menu does not center. Also the background image at the top doesn't load at the top - unless you click the body - then it aligns where it's suppose to be, but that's something I haven't looked into yet.
The menu however, I've tried what I could find on Google, like putting the menu inside a DIV tag, making the menu an include file and of course the obvious like C tags and things like that. But no matter what I do the menu won't move, so I've ran out of things to try.

Any ideas? I'd be really grateful!

Repairing and old site - a nightmare

Hello,

I have to "repair" an old website: ww w.lah t.com and it's been a nightmare to me.

The site is completely built with tables...not divs, no css... so it is specially cumbersome and painful to change anything.

Also, the site uses asp, I use php... imagine

But I have some few specific questions:

a) The client wants every page of this site indexed by Google analytics. I inserted the code on a include file, common to every page on the site. I did that 24 hours ago, and still nothing. I double checked to see if the code was the same as the one provided by Google, still nothing. Any ideas?

b) I noticed that if you type: www. laht. com or www. laht. com/Index.asp (notice the capital I), and www. laht. com/index.asp or even www. laht .com/INDEX.asp it works every time. How is this possible? I thought the index name had to be always in lower case. Is there a code I am missing somewhere? Maybe this: makes that possible? I'm completely lost.
Actually the client wants me to “merge” the ww w.laht.com/index.asp page and the
ww w.laht.com page…Why does he think there are two different “index” pages? How do I answer that?

I hope I will never have to work on an already built web site again, especially if my job consists in finding and fixing other people's bugs

Cheers,

Eduardo

IE6 Issues

Take a look at this site I am putting together:

ww w.koo lertek.com/computer-parts/pc/viewCategories.asp

I have a few issues with IE6 (*sigh*)

1. The product search on the left. I cannot enter any input.

2. Main content, there are rows of product categories. After the last row, you will see about 3px black bar just outside of it.

3. At near the bottom (just above the footer) there is a white horizontal line that shouldn't be there.

The client can live with #2 and #3 but I really to figure out why it's not working in IE6. Maybe it's just my IE6 browser?

Keep in mind that the product search has a 'cleardefault' script to clear out the default text. I still have the same problem above even if the script is disabled.

Thanks.

Mantra: Documentation, documentation, documentation...

My former supervisor beat me over the ears with it... but he was right, I learned the hard way.

Tell me, what is the name of the kids in your class photo? You used to know them so easily so did you jot them down on back? Even your friends of the time? Can you list them today?

Have you ever had a "Blond moment" as the Germans are want to say? You forget someone's name, or how to comment out in PHP or some other moment where you simply do not remember something you did yesterday and will likely tomorrow, just right now it is gone? Memory is a cruel thing.

Document everything! Something will need changing or rewriting down the line. You will be away from a project a long time or someone else will take over. This will happen and it is a pain, believe me.

Case in Point: I was tasked to rewrite a simple read only App used once in a while to look up legacy data, it was called ABE. I planned it , poked at it and built it in Crystal Reports before deciding to do the final in Flex.

I was a good way towards completion when I was told that I had 6 weeks to rewrite a more important App built in Paradox. So I put ABE aside and begin trying to figure out what the new project was all about as I knew nothing of Paradox. Low and behold... ABE is a part of it. Fine, I based the other sections on how I built ABE and used the ABE part in the "Big B" App. Then one day my data is coming up wrong, the sums are different than the old Big B App.

There is NO documentation on the Access version of ABE, but you can get into access to see the SQL statements and what tables are used. But Paradox is a compiled system, so without the original source code or DOCUMENTATION, you have to shoot in the dark and hope your guesses pan out. It took me weeks to finally discover that Paradox had it's own data tables on the network. Now I have 5 oracle data sets and 5 Paradox data sets. Are they the same? So another two weeks trying to compare them to see if they are the same data or a mix or different.

[Bare in mind that in the weeks I speak of here I also have days where I am working on emergencies and my weekly Batch Processes.]

Now that I have different data sets that must be queried, I begin trying to find ways to compare the data for duplicates, but each try gives different results. Finally while speaking to the users I discover that the first generation was Paradox, then 2nd generation was Access and a complete instant switch to Oracle, so in fact I have 2 different data sets per application section. So I have to figure out how to port the Paradox data into Oracle, then develop a statement to combine the data of both data sets into one chunk of data.

Now with new data sets I return to my Flex interface to connect the data to the App... and it is written in ancient Sumerian. I do not recognize the code, I documented none of it so I spend another few days trying to figure out what Java classes do what so I can trouble shoot the errors and why my data is not showing, because I did not comment the code or document anything!

Long story short, the deadline was the end of August, all September was finding the Paradox data and sorting it and October has been porting it to Oracle and developing SQL statements etc and we are ending October and I am not finished.

Imagine if I had had documentation that described what Big B was and how and who used it. What if the Paradox and access versions of ABE were documented and the Paradox version told me where it gets it's data. What if it explained that in 3 of the 5 sections making up Big B, I would have Oracle and Paradox tables to deal with. What if I had just commented my Java classes, Action Script classes and my main interface to remind myself what does what and why. Just guess how much quicker it all would have gone?

Documentation, Documentation, documentation! Write and keep notes. Jot down any connections with databases that the web site uses. Comment even the most mundane code as it may not be so clear two months from now. Use clear names that describe what something does or is. Comment you code some more. Finally when you are finished document the process you used, any info on old databases or such. Describe issues you had and who you fixed them (this may be nice one day when you have the same errors in another project) and describe in this final documentation what it does, who uses it, what technologies are used... anything that may help you or someone else later fixing or re-writing it.

It all may be clear today... but not two months from now. Even trouble shooting is easier when you have comments denoting the beginning and end of sections you may want to find fast when scrolling.

I suspect most of you will say that is a good idea and then not due it like me. I also am sure that one day you will have a bad time of it and wish you had and start doing it then... after you are bald or gray. Trust me, make the effort.

Thanks to Quyen who's comments in my 2 mistakes of CSS thread seeded the idea for a thread on this subject.

See, I told you I was in over my head here!

form action inside iframe calling outside url problem in IE? I imagine it's a security issue. So I have a login form, inside an iframe src'ed to an outside url, and the forms action is linked to/calling the outside URL. This works fine everywhere but in IE. Instead of logging in, IE redirects to the actual login form - the one I've iframed. Anyone know of a workaround for this?

Thought I'd ask. If no, I have a few other options up my sleave. But, this is my prefered method, so I thought I'd give it a good try. Thanks!

Good morning, :)

Contact form confirmation in Fancybox popup? I'm using Fancybox to display a simple contact form. The form is inline (within the main page) in a hidden div. All I need is to validate the simple captcha (2 + 2 = ?), and to display a thank you message once submitted. That I can do, however, I need this to all take place within the fancybox popup. That I can't do! Then the user simply closes the popup once finished as normal. Anyone dealt with this before? Thanks!

This post got me sort of close http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-forum/154171-contact-form-popup-confirmation.html but the on pressing the submit button it closes the fancybox window. But when I reopen the fancybox popup window the thank you message is there. But, I also cant get the message to leave either without closing the window and refreshing the page (FX wants to "resend the page").

Quick IE issue I thought I should share, in case someone has a fresh view on it for me... I just recently added a new footer design to http://www.falkencr eative.com [remove spaces]. It works just fine in Firefox, and IE7 & 8, but of course IE6 hates me. :) If you compare Firefox and IE6, you'll notice that the main issue is that the footer's background doesn't stretch all the way across the page.

Any ideas? At this point, I'm almost considering ignoring IE6 for this issue... It's still functional, just doesn't look as pretty as in newer browsers.
