The Olympics

OK, so I have been busy, never gotten it posted during.

Sports - Bah Humbug!

But you Canucks Rock in your opening ceremonies! Anyone catch it? Bloody awesome it was... and that from someone in Alaska who watches whales and salmon runs every year... the ice breaking up effect, the killer whales "under water" and the salmon run... Brilliant! I also like the woods and totem poles and the Aurora... I just did not care much for the end when the center piece was a mountain. But the rest was great, not to mention doing it last so the athletes could enjoy it. Well done!

But that was just a feast for the eyes... what I found best were the 1st Nations involvement. For those not in the know, 1st Nations are the major Native American... flavors. They are in turn broken down to the better knows individual tribes.

Just last month I was told the Canadians treat natives worse than US Americans do. I do not pay attention to the Olympics, just watched because my wife and daughter wanted to, so I may be wrong... but I do not think any US Olympics focused so much on the native culture. Once the official gabble was over, representatives of all nations came out and drummed and danced as the athletes were announced. Every thing from the natives closer related to ours in the lower 48 and my own Patawatomie (Great lakes area), as well as those from British Columbia who are closely related to our local Tlingit and Haida in SE Alaska and those from the far north related to the Aleuts (Eskimos). It blew me away that so much was done to represent our native peoples.

It is a shame that this grand show was tainted by the death of an athlete and the failure of one section of the torch to rise. I am afraid the death will mark this Olympics more than the wonderful opening ceremonies.

My only complaint was the French, OK I know, French Canadians and all... but it was in the English section and honestly English as the official languages should have been spoke first. But that is a minor issue considering.

Oh, and you Canadian type people, please accept my apologies for the once more embarrassing, not thought through, brainless comments uttered by our (thankfully) former Governor. Even many of her former followers here in Alaska are just shaking their heads about her comments on Canadian health care... especially as she admitted her family went to Canada for health care when she was a kid. She may have lived here but not all Alaskans like to admit it.

And I can almost throw a rock into Canada from my house! LOL

I have been asked to take over updating of a website belonging to a friend. It is their business site, but the person who did the original work pretty much abandoned it. The site itself is pretty basic information about their small business, no flash, shopping cart or boards or anything beyond my own meager talents. But the site is hosted with free domain registration for life (as long as you pay your bill each month). And the development was done with their promotional free software and templates... Soholaunch.

So what is Soholaunch like? I have tried to find some reviews, and didn't get much.
I did find something funny ... on a webhost's forum, someone asked for help with Soholaunch Pro .. and was told by a webhost rep to

The best idea is to post a ticket to the Support Team to check it out.

Without access to your account there is not much we can do over the forum.
__________________
Regards,

Why have a Forum for your customers if you don't use it to help?

Anyways, has anyone used Soholaunch and is it worth learning just for some occasional and minor updates for which I likely won't get paid..?

Non-scrolling header question

Hello, everyone. This is my first post, so apologies if it is in the wrong place.

I administer the site for a local bridge club at w ww.carlton bridge centre.org.uk. If you view this site, you will notice that it currently uses frames: this is merely to keep the header and menu static (i.e., non-scrolling).

The reason I use frames is that many of the pages (all the Results pages for events) are generated by our scoring program; otherwise, I would use an INCLUDE for the header and menu, and CSS to keep it still! The Results pages are auto-uploaded by our decidedly non-technical members using an app. called CarbonFTP—to keep everything as simple as possible for them.

Given those constraints, I have two questions:

1) Should I 'go against the flow' and just keep using frames for that site?

2) Is there some way that I could keep the header (and the menu, which incidentally was created using SoThink DHTML Menu if that helps you) non-scrolling WITHOUT using frames, yet still be able to have our auto-generated Results pages easily uploadable by our users?

Apologies if I haven't described those questions very well, or if they are FAQs. I've had a good look through many HTML 'how-to' sites, but I can't find any answer which would work for pages which are auto-generated by a third-party app.

Please do ask if there's any information I haven't given above which you would need in order to be able to help.

Any and all thoughts or ideas welcome. Sincere thanks in advance!
--
BFN
CAD

Coolest tool advice?

Hello,

I'm new here and so I hope I'm not breaking any forum rule, because that's not my intent at all.

I'm currently going to build a website that has to web hosting and web design and i want to offer a really cool tool to people that visit the site. Something that is really helpful and that is hard to find free. I don't plan on charging for the tool. I don't mind spending money on buying the master rights to a tool, so I can give it away, I just want something that is 1. helpful and 2. hard to find free (if you can find it free all over the net, me offering it free isn't really that helpful). Anyway, I thought... hummm... who better to ask than a bunch of people who are building web sites what kinds of tools they would love to be able to use free and aren't finding.

Also, i'm not talking things like Dreamweaver, photoshop, and other software, but something more like a logo generator, favicon generator, blah, blah, blah. Obviously the generators I mentioned are easy to find, but you get the idea.

I would love to get any advice or ideas you care to contribute. And heck once I have a winner I'll post it on here and everyone can come use the tool!

Thanks!

Justin
