Designers, don't be scared!
Typically, as soon as you mention code or programming to a designer ... they flee the room in terror. That's a shame because the fact of the matter is, that a lot of the really cool creative capabilities in Flash CS3, is locked up in the programming.
For example, did you know you could used Flash scripting/programming to:
- Dynamically draw lines and shapes on the screen.
- Animate objects on screen much more easily than you could using the Flash timeline.
- Animate objects on screen in ways that would be impossible to do with the timeline.
- Dynamically read information from xml files or databases and then use that information to control the flow of your animations.
... The above is just a small sample of the power of Actioscript and why you as a designer, should learn scripting in Flash. Besides, with our videos, you will find that it isn't that hard.
New content on the way
We have lots of new content (videos and articles) planned on the above. For now, you may want to check out our Actionscript 2.0 videos.
Flash is now doing what Java could never do ... Flash can now deliver rich applications that work in all the browsers and even deploy on the desktop. And they're fast!
Flash is bigger, faster, stronger:
Flash has grown way beyond being a simple animation software. Flash has become the platform of choice for delivering web based software - something that Java Applets once promised but never delivered.
With the release of Flash CS3 and the new ultra powerful (and fast) Flash virtual machine (that uses the new Actionscript 3.0), you can now build incredible software easily with Flash.
Flash has really matured as a developers language. Besides the core Flash program, Adobe has released a few interesting products that are directly aimed at Flash application development rather than the traditional animation based Flash we are used to:
- Flex - an open source framework for building web delivered Flash based applications
- Flex Builder IDE for rapid application development.
- Air - a wrapper/runtime that allows you to take Flex apps and deploy them as cross platform desktop applications.
- Actionscript 3.0 is now a strongly typed object oriented language that comes packed with many useful objects for database and xml work, ui creation and much more.
We have lots of new content (videos and articles) planned on the above. For now, you may want to check out our Actionscript 2.0 videos.
Over the years I've written a few articles on Flash that have become pretty popular on the Web. So I figured it made sense to include links to them here. I hope you find them useful.
I will have new Flash CS3 videos out within a few days.
Flash MX is an older version of Flash. Though a few years old, many of the basics found in Flash MX are pretty much the same as the latest version of Flash - Flash CS3. As such, you can still learn a lot with Flash MX videos and articles.
Once I get a chance, I will be including direct links to many of our Flash MX video tutorials.
