I have a few semesters in school before I even get into HTML and CSS so i am reading books on my own. But which should I put more emphasis on first? I would think to understand CSS I would first need to know HTML. Am I correct? My understanding of HTML is not bad, so I may be able to get by with learning both at the same time.

Yes, HTML is the basis of all websites but CSS goes with it. CSS is for styling the HTML content, so learn both at the same time.

Javascript, jQuery and Ajax are for client-side processing of special effects.

PHP is for server-side processing (forms to email or database and lots of other features).

MySQL is for databases.

I was in your exact position before and i read like three books this summer and now i have 10 times the grasp of web design i though i would ever have. If i would suggest for HTML and CSS i would say Sams Teach yourself HTML and CSS in 24 hours.

It helped me out alot and just read up on anything web you can for example new technology, But to answer your question 1.HTML, 2.CSS, 3. Javascript/PHP and so on.

Thanks,

Thank you everyone for the advice and links.

Yesterday I was provided a link, www.chami.com, for an HTML kit that will also help me learn the codes.

I agree that W3schools is the bomb, start from there on HTML and work your way up to CSS. :)
Before three months ago I was a complete novice on how to create websites, now I have mastered the fundamentals (CMS, skills need for certain things, running websites, etc), and they're all burned in my head, and I would be more than happy to share this knowledge with you and lighten up the pain and confusion.

hi,
Firebug is the CSS coders best friend, and it helps you develop an instinct for where to look when things break.

W3C schools site is still my first port of call if I forget a certain snippet.

I don't really think CSS can be truly separated from HTML though as the HTML makes a massive difference to how you can approach the CSS.

As stated before, you should learn 1st HTML, 2nd CSS, 3rd PHP, 4th MySQL, and so on... I'm not an expert, but the first thin i learned was HTML, then CSS and then PHP and MySQL in the same course.

HTML means high-per text markup language. It is more easy to learn and install. It is web developing toll.

Say again?

It is Hyper, not High-per and it is not anything you install at all, it is a language.

HTML and CSS pretty much go together and should be learned at the same time.

I agree, no use learning HTML formatting just to use CSS instead. Learn both parallel.
