Research the company before and ensure that your design style conforms with theirs. Sam attracts same. And yeah number 5 above, offer benefit to the company. Thanks for the great post.

Another option is to look for work on freelancer sites. Yes you never meet them, but if you use escrow and follow site rules, you never get ripped off.

Another good ideas is to do a little research before you meet with the client. Know who you're meeting with, what industry they're in, and who their competitors are. You'll love the look you get when you say something like "and Mr. Propoect, since industry XYZ is seeing a trend in more international buyers, this website will surely give you an edge over ABC Competitor." Business owners are smart and recognize BS so make sure you've got the facts. :)

One other suggestion that while you need to have a general knowledge of Web Design issues, try to focus on one area of uniqueness where you can really shine and add value to the company you are interviewing with. For instance, a knowledge of SEO issues, or Flash/Actionscript 3, or even Social media issues could make you an invaluable asset to a company that thought they were just looking for a Web designer.

I agree, with more and more people out of work and others having a very difficult time to find work we will see a spike in start up businesses that all start with a website. Now is a good time to offer low cost options to have websites built.

I would agree with Stefan, it isn't always necessary to meet people in person. I do a lot of work for people that are far away; no way to physically meet with them. It doesn't take much to get started designing websites though. I agree that virtually anyone can jump in and become a web designer if they show some talent and offer good customer service.

After you establish a client, it is rare by my experience, that I would have to meet them.

... Maybe twice a year with the good ones.

That said, when you are first pitching an idea, sometimes you do have to meet them because they want to see who you are in person.
