Hey Tom,

Yep, I'm using WordPress.

I've been poking around the 'guts' of WordPress with some interest because I see a few custom modifications down the road ... you gotta love GPL!

That being said, so far so good.

Thanks,

Stefan

Hi,

A blog is basically a web-application (website tied to a database,) that allows you add content to a website via web-forms - no HTML required. In some ways like a classic message board except with a blog, usually only one person can post new content.

Another aspect of a blog is that they are template driven; this allows you to change the appearence of the website (blog) by altering just a few files.

With some popular blog tools, you can instantly change the entire look of the website with a click of a button - yes, it's pretty cool!

-

This is a basic explanation, as many blog tools (software) go way beyond that. For example:

Many blogs allow people to post comments about an article written in a blog. Another common feature with blogs is that they automatically create something called an RSS feed.

RSS feeds are basically XML files that provide a summary of the articles found on the blog. People can 'subscribe' to RSS feeds using an RSS feed reading software.

The RSS feed reading software periodically checks to see if there are new articles on the blog ... and lets you know. The one I use, pops up a little window with a summary of the new articles.

- -

This explanation is really simple, and I will have much more to say about that in the very near future.

Should you build your own blog?

No. There are great free blog software you can use so there is no point. This one here is called WordPress - it's free and very powerful.

Thanks for posting!

Hello Stefan,

I received your last email about you recognizing what you actually were talking about, blogs, without having one yourself and that you decided to put up one. It looks...Like a blog, great !

Because I am not familiair with owning a blog I was wondering if it is a smart thing to 'write' one yourself or should you use a 'free' or 'paid for' provided one ? What kind of 'techniques' (javascripts, php) are needed for a nicely working blog ?

In short: what is the difference between 'just' a website and a blog ?

I am curious...And also believe that it is time to put up one !
